Premier League on ABC?

With the new TV deal announced, does anyone know the situation for Premier League being shown on the ABC.

Has anything changed with the new deal?

Is Channel 9 blocking it from being shown?

Is it NSWRL's fault for it not being shown?

Does anyone know what needs to happen now for Premier League to be shown on the ABC?

that'd be great, i know the qld cup has abc telecasts each week. well they did last time i was up there. i think.

The qld Cup can be seen nationwide on the new ABC 2 digital channell on Thursday night late.
Premier League would be great to watch there too. They show VFL and aussie rules from all over on other nights.

cheers roopy, i guess since i got digital i can watch a bit of qld cup, i think my team is easts tigers. my cousin used to play for them.

but yeah i'd sure they'll eventually get something up and running.

I am so glad someone has raised this, I have spent the last 18 months chasing this up and perhaps it is time we got a petition going to get it shown. There have been several issues holding this back which I would like to point out.

1. The ABC believed that they could not show Premier League due to 9 contractual restrictions. this was the case but ceased some time back.
2. The NSWRL are more interested in getting Jim Beam shown on TV.
3. The ABC have always wanted money to have it shown.
4. The NSWRL is concerned that beacuse their competitions are sponsored they could not be referred as the VB Premier League or Jim Beam Cup cometition. The Union is not promoted on the ABC as this but advertising is displayed at games.

I have contacted both the NSWRL and the ABC having cleared up point 1 which the ABC believed was a major sticking point it is now up to the NSWRL to follow up and pursue this avenue to promote its competition. I also wrote to the then Minister for Communication asking for their assistance in promoting the states number 1 winter code on the nations broadcaster as is done in other states.

I would think the person to get in contact with is the CUB promotions person. It would be worth millions to them to get the games on TV, so they should be a bit motivated to make it happen.

I am thinking about a petition as well. I am sure all rugby league fans would sign it.

I sent the NSWRL an email over the weekend asking what the chances are of Premier League being shown on ABC next year. I havent received a reply yet.

Damn i would tape every single game shown ive PL was shown i watched the Manly vs Bulldogs 1 and it was a very enterning match J Taylor from manly scored with 8 secs left on the clock to send Manly to 34-36 and then T Burns kicked a conversion RIGHT on the sideline to draw the game

So it is very good to watch

Seeing QC is good but i really wished that Foxtel would have a Rugby channel which would show maybe league and union?

As I've said on previous threads the ABC coverage of QLD Cup games up here is very popular. I for one tune in every Saturday and I don't follow a team (Not unless Newtown joined the QRL). I'd love to think the ABC would get on board with premier league, I think it would be a huge shot in the arm for League in general. In reply to Bluebags mention of sponsoring concerns by the NSWRL, the match up here is merely referred to as the QLD Cup game. WIZARD sponsor the comp and their signage is there for all to see during the game. Commentators David WRIGHT and Warren BOLAND don't plug the sponsors but don't have to because of the signage everywhere.
Come on NSWRL, get off your arse and promote your product!

Yeah you guys really don't know what you are missing. It's fantastic and has provided a real shot in the arm for the Qld Cup to be shown LIVE each saturday afternoon across Queensland. It has resulted in an increase in crowds and attendance is not limited to just the old timers but, especially at Eastern Suburbs Tigers games, a more shall we say gentrified crowd. Furthermore the team travel across the state to cover games in all areas.

It's a tragedy that Rugby Union is shown instead besides Premier League OR Jim Beam Cup.

PL should be shown before JBC because it is a higher standard competition.

I wish the League would show some leadership with this but they care more about JBC.

Why are the crowds so small at Qld Cup games on ABC2 this year, is that normal?

Apparently the reason why the ABC can't is because the Premier League TV rights come under the banner of the NRL, and Fox Sports have the rights to Premier League.

The last time the equivelant(Reserve Grade) was shown on TV was in 1996 on SportsAustralia (3 matches a week).

We've also heard that the rights are not held by the official broadcasters and I'm inclined to believe that.

The biggest problem for PL is access. Since PL is usually played before NRL, there are problems with sharting broadcasting facilities. As if Fox or Nine would give up space for ABC to telecast PL.

For PL on TV to work they'd have to telecast matches that are played away from NRL venues. Newtown, Norths, Balmain, Wests, Cougars, Canberra and Souths regularly host PL stand alone games. It can be done. It's up to the NSWRL and clubs to construct a draw that features stand alone games every week from a variety of clubs. It's not that difficult IMO.

I miss that too. Only the radio does this. I also miss seeing the tables published in the papers. That was a good advertising tool for the competition.
