Holy cow that is peanuts. Losing a prelim in the afl is 330k

The hawks scored 1.21m and freo 660,000. The players get at least half which doesnt count as the salary cap. So for the hawks players, 30k each. Nice.

The nrl need to step it up.

NRL looks at beefing up reward for title as Nines take cash cake

SUNDAY SIN BIN

The NRL will review premiership prizemoney now that clubs can earn more for winning the inaugural Auckland Nines tournament than lifting the Provan-Summons trophy. Next weekend's grand final winner will earn just $400,000, while approximately half a million dollars is up for grabs for just two days' work for a preseason tournament at Eden Park. That compares with the $1 million the AFL premiers earn for winning their ultimate prize. When the issue was last discussed, the NRL clubs asked that the majority of the game's funds went towards boosting the club grants rather than loading up the premiership prizemoney.

However, that was before the ARLC signed off on a $1 billion broadcast deal. The NRL's head of football, Todd Greenberg, revealed the situation would be reviewed in lieu of the Nines prize pool. ''We'll review it at the end of the year in consultation with the clubs,'' Greenberg said. ''I understand the premise, the Nines prizemoney is significant and the NRL's hasn't moved over time. So yes, we will review it but we'll review it in consultation with the clubs because the priority currently is their grant rather than prizemoney. That's the current plan at the moment but that's not to say we can't change that.'' Conversely, the Nines have gone the other way and stacked the prizemoney at the expense of a higher participation fee. ''That provides a big carrot at the end for everyone to be excited about it,'' Greenberg said. ''Nines deserves big prizemoney to keep everyone hungry and focused to be a part of it.''

$$$ is not the driver obviously.

Holding the trophy up is priceless.

Explains why billionaires inject so much of their cash into their favourite footy teams.
They are a money drain.

It goes a lot deeper than prize money. Winning the premiership is the best way to get major sponsors on board, and they can inject millions of dollars into the club.

On top of that, you can hold up the Premiership and say that you and your team mates won the toughest competition of the toughest sport in the world.

We just got a million dollar sponsorship after winning two spoons!

I think we all know that. I doubt if anyone wants to win the comp for the prizemoney - except maybe Cronulla.

I think I remember when Saints won in 1977 they were presented with a giant cheque for $30k

Not quite true. There are 2 equal pools of money. Say $800m

So two pools of $400m.

Pool 1 is split evenly.

Pool 2 is split according to finish in the constructors champ

In 2011 rbr scored 65m from pool 2 + their share from pool 1

Mclaren were 2nd they scored 54m from pool 2 +their share of pool 1

So winning was actually worth 11m for rbr.

I'd call that prizemoney.
