Access to the online PlayStation Network has now been restored for Australian PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable owners, and Sony has announced its package of gifts to help compensate gamers for the lengthy outage. The outage followed an attack on Sony's data centre located in San Diego California on April 20. Sony says it was forced to shut down its network in order to complete an investigation into the attack and improve the security of the network infrastructure.
In the attack the user data of 77 million PlayStation customers was obtained by the hackers, including 1.5 million Australian accounts.

The Welcome Back program for Australians lets all existing PlayStation Network members choose two PS3 games. The games available for selection are:

  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Infamous
  • Wipeout HD/Fury
  • Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty
  • Dead Nation.
Those with PSP accounts are also eligible to download two PSP games. The games available are:

  • LittleBigPlanet PSP
  • ModNation PSP
  • Pursuit Force
  • Killzone Liberation.
All existing PlayStation Network members also receive 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership, while existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will be given 60 days free subscription.
Existing Music Unlimited subscribers will be given 30 days free subscription.
Sony says it is also working on an offer for PlayStation Home.
The content will be available for download via the PlayStation Store, which is not yet back online. Sony says “we are doing everything we can to make that happen as soon as possible”.
Sony also says it will be publishing new content to the PlayStation Store multiple times per week as soon as "commerce functionality is restored."
Sony has also offered free identity theft protection for North Americans affected by the malicious attack on PlayStation Network, but is yet to announce any details of a similar program for Australians.
In other PlayStation Network news, game developer Sucker Punch is evaluating extending the inFAMOUS 2 beta program, as well as expanding the scope of the beta content.
SOCOM developer Zipper will also announce details soon on new activities to get SOCOM 4 fans playing the shooter online again, while Treyarch says Call of Duty: Black Ops players will get another extra Double XP event.
Sony says it has worked closely with several external security firms to help implement "new security measures that strengthen safeguards against unauthorised activity, and provide consumers with greater protection of their personal information".
"The company has made considerable enhancements to the data security, including updating and adding advanced security technologies, additional software monitoring and penetration and vulnerability testing, and increased levels of encryption and additional firewalls."
Sony also says it has added an "early-warning system" for unusual activity patterns that could signal an attempt to compromise the network.
Sony expects to have all its online services in all countries fully restored by the end of May.

I got that email too... So which games should I get in your opinion? I havn't got any of those (for ps3 only, not psp)

Infamous is the only one I've played from
that list and I could never get in to it bit for free and with #2 coming out it's probably worth the punt.

Personally I thought 1 download from their choices and 1 of our own would have been the better option

I'll prolly get Ratchet and Clank + Dead Nation as i've either got or played the rest of them.

LBP is pretty cool
Wipeout is awesome if you're into ultrafast racers
I personally don't rate Infamous but it seemed to be critically acclaimed.

So, I get two free games because I lost access to a system I haven't used in almost a year? Great compensation if you ask me.

Nice of Sony to do this even though they didn't have to,unfortunately i won't download any of these free games because it would rape my internet quota but still a nice gesture anyway

Uh oh...

Report: Sony PlayStation Network Password Reset Page Exploited, Customer Accounts Potentially Compromised

Joel Johnson — According to reports on Nyleveia.com, Eurogamer, and NeoGAF, Sony's PlayStation Network password reset system-the one just put in place after the PSN hack-has been compromised, allowing hackers to change a PSN password if they know your email and date of birth. Exactly the sort of information that was released in the original hack.

Sony has taken the password reset system offline. Kotaku has reached out to Sony for comment.

Update 1: The good news (as pointed out by NeoGAF's "Metalmurphy") is that if your account was compromised, you should have gotten an email from PSN that says your password has been reset.

Update 2: An official community moderator on the EU PlayStation forums notes the following services are offline:

PlayStation.com
PlayStation forums
PlayStation Blog
Qriocity.com
Music Unlimited via the web client
All PlayStation game title websites

Update 3: This is the purported exploit as provided to Kotaku. As PlayStation services are now offline, this exploit is no longer able to be executed:

The prodecure is as follows:
1) Navigate to : https://store.playstation.com/accounts/reset/resetPassword.action?token (this is normally, via email, https://store.playstation.com/accounts/reset/resetPassword.action?token=YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY with the y's being a unique token) - do not enter the code at this point.
2) Open a new tab in firefox, and go to fr.playstation.com (other pages will work too most likely), and click Login (Connexion)
3) Click Recover password
4) Enter the email and date of birth of the target account
5) Click continue, then on the confirmation page, click "Reset using E-mail"
6) Switch back to the original tab, and enter the code, then click continue
7) You will now be asked to enter a new password for the target account

LOL Sony have come out and confirmed that story is a lie, they came out and said that they had to take it down temporarily to fix a potential URL exploit. It was not hacked again.

Potential URL exploit... They clearly worked hard over the last month if they had to wait to go live before fixing it.

And this stuff never happens to other companies?
I still remember your "this could kill Sony" posts

No-one I've seen has any problem with Sony fixing it's issues, the only thing people seem to be concerned about in regards to Sony's actions for restoration was the lack of communication.

On this scale, no it hasn't happened to other companies. The fact that they've gone live whilst still finding flaws in their system is a symptom of how rushed they felt they needed to get back to market.

It's certainly damaged their brand significantly. Estimates are at a 24 billion loss this year. I said it has the potential to for a company that relies heavily on brand recognition and higher pricing for equivalent products based on that.

No-one I've seen has any problem with Sony fixing it's issues, the only thing people seem to be concerned about in regards to Sony's actions for restoration was the lack of communication.

Nor should they have any problem with fixing their issues. The time it has taken has certainly angered developers and users alike. Some developers have already said they are considering leaving the platform or making significant losses due to the outage. PixelJunk and Capcom are two that spring to mind.

Seriously, all your posts are either based on approximates, estimates and contemplating.

I got on cod yesterday and found 700,000 people online.. Same as I used to find before the outage.

How on earth will sony lose 24 billion, how did you even come up with that figure..I do not know anyone who is talking like you, everyone I know just wanted the system operational yet again..

I actually had a meeting with several combank fraud investigators, the ps3 is NOT even being looked at..they do not and will not be putting into place new details or follow ups regarding the matter, in there own words "it's a beat up".

Clearly the hackers breached the system, but losing 24 billion over a 3 week period = 8 billion a week, thats a bit much.

Google it. I didn't say they lost it in 3 weeks. Brand damage, lost PSN sales, compensation costs and litigation costs are where the figure came from.

Truth is, we won't know the damage for quite a while yet and just because people are logging into psn doesn't mean they're purchasing music, other media or psn content.

I didn't even mention the losses until it was brought up. I merely posted another article on the issue.
