Putting on Report or the Sin Bin

How does putting the opposing player on report benefit our team in that game?
The player is still on the field when he could be sitting for 10. There is no advantage to us apart from the ensuing penalty.
If then, that player does get suspended for 3 weeks etc, that still doesn't benefit us. We wont be playing that team in the next 3 weeks.
However, it may benefit another team who is close to us on the competition table and they might win, because a key player didn't play against them, when they may otherwise have lost.

Referees seem to be as weak as piss when it comes to making a decision that may affect the game. If its as obvious as anything it is going to be a holiday for the player, give them a holiday on the bench right there and then and stop being such softcocks.

Depends on the offense + probably need a 5 minute sin bin for this type of thing.

That said, putting players on report is supposed to be more about holding the player responsible (and punishing them) rather than giving a benefit to the other team.

I get more annoyed by refs failing to bin players for clear professional fouls - it just keeps happening, and so rarely do the refs properly punish players for it. The other one is repeated penalties (particularly inside the 20m-ish zone).. in Super League I've seen refs give a warning after a few penalties like that in a row, then bin the next player on that team to give one away inside 5-10mins. Would stop teams like the Roosters doing that (in spirit what they are doing is committing professional fouls also, although not as clear cut).

Not sure what the answer is, but definitely has to be based on the offence - would have been diabolical if Mannering was binned against the Knights

They don't use the bin enough, but it needs to be consistent if they use it, and unfortunately year-on-year the refs show they simply cannot be consistent

There was some talk, prior to the preseason games, that the old 5 minutes in the bin was to be re-instated, or at lease trialed before the season proper. I didn't see or hear any more about it.

I agree with the Big Marn regarding putting players on report and not giving any other form of penalty is a real soft c**k option. I rate it the same as the video ref. I know that Rich will attest to this when I say that back in the day, the sole ref on the paddock would make a decision - be it right, wrong or indifferent, and they would get on with it. Maintain the putting on report by all means, but award a penalty as well.
