Robbie Williams in a best of Britian list is disgraceful, especially considering the absence of any Clapton, The Verve and Pink Floyd. Even though Radiohead are the most overrated band ever, they deserve to be there more than Robbie.

1. Layla - Derek And The Dominoes

Good song, but top 10?

2. Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin (how'd they miss this?)

Over-rated to the extreme. People take the piss out of it for good reason. There are other better Led Zep songs.

3. Let It Be - The Beatles

Hard to pick one Beatles song. Strawberry Fields? In My Life? She Loves You? You name it...

4. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd (ditto)

Maybe...

5. Jumping Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones

Again, there are a few to choose from.

6. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Over-rated...

7. My Generation - The Who

Great song but I'd probably pick Won't Get Fooled Again or Baba O'Riley.

8. Wonderwall - Oasis

Meh...

9. Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve

It's a Rolling Stones song, which automatically disqualifies it.

10. Baby Please Don't Go - Van Morrison

Was by Them, not Morrison (technically speaking), and I'd also argue that there are better songs of his.

Top ten British songs:
1. Oasis - Champagne Supernova
2. The Beatles - Hey Jude
3. Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond
4. Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger
5. Verve - The Drugs Don't Work
6. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
7. Blur - The Universal
8. Oasis - Live Forever
9. The Beatles - Across The Universe
10. The Rolling Stones - Angie

Strong Britpop theme but oh well.

Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, Jimp Gordon and Duane Allman. Only recorded one album (In a month and a half, mind you) which was a masterpiece and performed a handful of shows, but were brilliant (mainly because of having two of the best guitarists of all time playing together, Duane Allman was imo the best slide guitarist ever). The song Layla came from this group, although it's usually credited to Clapton alone because of the unplugged version.

Although Layla was/is a great track, "I looked away" and Bell-Bottom Blues" have always been big faves of mine

There's some great songs on there but....

The Smiths - How Soon is Now? or There is a Light That Never Goes out

New Order - Blue Monday or Bizarre Love Triangle

Joy Division - Love will tear us apart or Atmosphere

The Clash - London Burning or anything from that album really

The Kinks is good to see, but there were other songs I'd put in front of Waterloo Sunset

Blur - Boys and Girls or Parklife

Strong crap theme. Oasis? Give me a freaking break. The most overrated English band ever. At least you got Wish You Were Here right...

OK...I think I have thought about this enough to actually offer an opinion rather than just bag everyone elses...

In no particular order:

* Come Together - The Beatles
* London Calling - The Clash
* All Day and All of the Night - The Kinks
* Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack
* Blue Monday - New Order
* Rid of Me - P.J. Harvey
* Karma Police - Radiohead
* You Can't Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones
* Richard III - Supergrass
* Sonnet - The Verve

Not everyone's cup of team I am sure, however I kept it at one song from each band and probably covered the 8 most important artists of the last couple of generations (I consider The Verve pretty important - Urban Hymns is a big big album...), as well as Supergrass and P.J. Harvey because the songs are brilliant.

I would have one Oasis song in there, but three? Have they done anything remotely good since What's the story? Also Radiohead has to be in there with Creep, or Paranoid Android or No Surprises or Karma Police anything...

Here's my ten:

1. Beatles - A Day In The Life
2. Clash - Train In Vain
3. Oasis - Supersonic
4. Rolling Stones - Under My Thumb
5. Gomez - Catch Me Up
6. Smiths - This Charming Man
7. Beatles - Rocky Raccoon
8. Madness - Bed And Breakfast Man
9. Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now
10. Stranglers - Golden Brown

Hmm...lots of British bands end with an 'Ssss' sound, don't they?

My favourite tracks on that album were actually Nobody Knows You, Little Wing and Key To The Highway. My top 10 weren't necessarily my favourite songs by the artists, which I admit is kind've weird.

Just to clear something up, my top 10 list wasn't necessarily my favourite songs by the artists, but the songs I think should've been nominated here. If I were to present...

1) Steppin' Out
2) Bron Yr Aur
3) While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4) Breathe
5) Sway
6) Bohemian Rhapsody
7) Overture
8) Gas Panic
9) Lucky Man
10) And It Stoned Me

I'd have to answer what 7/10 of them were ;-). And honestly, none of them had as big an impact as what I switched them with.

I used to have Keys to the Highway on a tape (going back a few years) and we would turn it on at Bega and race against the song to get to Tahtra 12 miles away........
