Quality & Quantity at #1

Has the league ever seen the current depth of quality in one position ever before? IMO the number quality of fullbacks currently in the NRL is astounding.

Leading up to SOO, I believe any of the following guys would be a worthy selection at #1 for their respective states, most of whom have already represented at this level.

Qld for starters,

Matt Bowen
Milton Thaiday
Billy Slater
Rhys Wesser
Clinton Shifcoske
Greg Inglis

NSW

Anthony Minichiello
Brett Hodgson
Ben Hornby

Others worth noting
Luke Patten
Wade Mckinnon
Adam McDougall
Luke Stewart

If only the league had this much depth in all positions.

I'm assuming you mean Brett.

Fullback is certainly a position that will be fiercely fought at representative level this year. Minichiello hasn't done much wrong to lose the number one for NSW or Australia but there is plenty that could take his place in a moment.

Agreed, and how about centres!

Gasnier
Cooper
Hodges
Ingliss
Gidley (Matt)
Lyon
Bell
King
Tate

Two positions that are extremely hotly contested are the fullback and the two centres!

Add Tahu to that list

The Kiwis are in ok shape too with Cairns-born Brent Webb and Auckland-born defector K Hunt in pretty good form lately.

Actually, if it wasn't for David Simmons, every club in the NRL would boast a top fullback.

Yep Simmons is a dead shocker, I will always remember him celebrating a try under the posts like he definately scored and he dropped the damn thing stone cold!

There's some great fullbacks around. Some can't even make the first team like Greenshields atm. I also rate Steve Turner who is currently playing on the wing I believe

You assume correct, a fumble by Fifita. And agreed on Greenshields, a great fullback stuck in the 2nds, but he'll get a run next year at the Titans.

I think Hunt needs another year or two before the jury can rule on him. And if Peachey was still with the sharks he'd complete the full set.

I doubt he will either, but nobody should pledge their allegance to NZ coz they don't think they will make the grade for Aus! Good on him for trying to achieve his dream and not settling for anything else.

Still way too early to judge whether or not Karmichael will play SOO or for Australia. Quite obviously the bloke could end up at 5/8, halfback or even lock. Add to that the fact that he seems to not be an injury prone player and the fact that he has a minimum of ten years left in the game...

Totally that he's nowhere near it yet though, not even close for origin. Bowen, Slater, Wesser, Milton Thaiday, Schifofske and Inglis have it over him atm.

He's 19 for f**ks sake. How many current fullbacks were starting first grade at 17, let alone 19? And that's considering fullback isn't his natural position.

Not necessarilly I heard the Titans we're chasing the Great Britain A fullback Richie Mathers (is that his name?).
