Ponga will consult with a specialist surgeon on Thursday about whether to go under the knife immediately to repair a labral tear in his left shoulder, which would rule him out of this year's series.

With Cowboys star Valentine Holmes unavailable for Origin I due to a shoulder charge suspension, Brimson is set to assume Ponga's fullback role.

Broncos forward David Fifita, who is Titans-bound next year, has a syndesmosis injury and was ruled out on Tuesday by Gold Coast medicos of playing any part in the series.

The Maroons already have Michael Morgan, Corey Oates, Anthony Milford and Kyle Feldt ruled out due to injury.

No McGuire is a shock. It would be one thing to leave him out of a game, but to say he's not in the Top 27 players is extremely bold. It maybe a reflection of his relationship with Bennett, his character or Bennett looking to go in a new direction with Patrick Carrigan.

My read is that he saw Arrow and Carrigan and decided he didn't need another mobile middle forward, especially with Papalii to come in.

It's fairly dire circumstances with all the Queensland teams struggling. It looks like Bennett is using the series with a view to the future. Which is how Coates got a call up. He might not be ready for this series, but he'll be better for the experience and all the prospects coming through he has one of the highest ceilings.

Hess is lucky that there's a real shortage of bullocking edge forwards in the Maroons ranks. I don't think he'd get a look in if Fifita was fit.

For all his faults, I'd still have McGuire over Carriage. It definitely is a young and inexperienced squad so far.

Did they pick the wrong knights centre? A bit like Peter Taylor instead of Mark in cricket and Wayne Sengelman instead of challis in the 80’s
