Question to Management: Why Souths Logan?

Whats Doing

He is an insight from someone who use to a connection with the South Logan club and has some knowledge of the South Logan/Canberra arrangement.

From a junior perspective, the Souths Logan area has the strongest junior base in Brisbane. Juniors include Karmichael Hunt, Falou, Cam Smith and it was to try and tie this vast talent base to head down to Canberra.

Then there was the Meninga factor where Souths Logan were the perennial battlers who lacked money to keep any of their decent juniors or others players for that matter as other clubs would offer more money for players to change clubs. Meninga saw this as an opportunity to save the Souths Logan club by having them as a feeder club which would benefit both clubs - Canberra for the Brisbane junior base and Souths Logan for the ability to keep players and their juniors and become competitive.

Having a club in the NSW Cup would limit Canberra in gaining access to juniors. The move is a long term arrangement and only time will tell whether Canberra will wait that long for the next generation of superstar juniors to come their way oir whether the NRL changes competitions around which requires a rethink of the strategy.

Hope this explanation helps.

Mal is a great man for both the Raiders and Souths Logan....He is a believer in the theory.... 'Once a Magpie, always a Magpie..Once a Raider always a Raider'

Geez Mal is a f*cking legend!

In more ways than one....The bloke is quality through and through and a humble champion who loves his Club(s)
I got Mal to get a Qld SOO jumper signed for the local juniors. He held onto it for three weeks and when it came back it had over 60 FOGS signatures on it. That was a couple of years ago...
He took it to the three SOO games in the series and wouldn't return it until he had Alf and Wally's signature on it.
Now that is a GOOD bloke who loves his League and appreciates it heritage.
No wonder Mal is a success at SOO coaching. His players know he has integrity and quality..

If there has been one guy that has stuck by this club it is the Big Man ... could have taken a big offer to return to St Helens during our salary cap probs back in 1991 but was the first to re-sign which made it easier for the remainder of the guys to follow his example ... the club re-signed all the players that it really required (except for Lazzo of ofcourse pissed off to the Broncs).

A few years later he went out in style scoring the last try in the '94 GF ... will never forget that picture, Mal with bent arm and clenched fist followed by players jumping all over him and you could even see a smile on ref McCullums face and I'm sure McCraken was happy for him as well.

It's a very strong comp..... it hardens the kids up... it prepares them mentally for the rigours of interstate travel to games...this comp has passion and is taken seriously by its players and the Qld public thats where i want my boys playing not in the souless graveyard that is premier league..or the fyshwick ferritz...pleeease.

Premier league=Nursing home.

He also had a VERY strong and lucrative offer to coach St Helens just a couple (probably three) years ago...which he knocked back

OK OK !! ... other than it worked for us in the past, it hardens the kids up, Big Mal is an ex Souths boy, prepares the kids for interstate travel, it's a stronger comp than NSWPL ..

Bay doesn't want to email or call the club because then he might get an answer... It's much easier to sit in a dark corner and poke sharp sticks at anything that you don't like with-out bothering to see what it really is...

Souths Logan = Mal's original club and an awesome way to get talent from the number one junior development area...

Keeping them here is ALWAYS going to be easier if you give them their start at first grade than if you buy them from a club and there and hope they stay, even in situations like Costigan's. Face it Canberra is a sh*tty place to live as far as most of Australia is concerned and you are always going to get people leaving for "family reasons".

keeping them here will be infinitely easier when we're successful in FG
good players want to play with good clubs, it doesnt matter where that club is situated... we had no drama attracting talent when we were a good side and it will be the same when we are a good side in the future

The point is what decisions have maangement made in the past decade that have resulted in the club reaping success or at least seen to be heading in that direction ... i think for every sign going forward one could find a couple in reverse ...

... when it comes to opinion one can quickly revert to discussion around the success the club has experienced of recent times compared against the optimism shown at the beginning of each season.

So the number one junior development area revolves around souths logan ... can you back that up with some stats or is that a comment that you've pulled out of mid-air ... have you considered the junior development area just on our door steps where the likes of Daley and Stuart honed thier skills ... I would think it would be less likely for those hardened country lads so cry boo hoo to return to the warmth of qld with family around the corner.

"Canberra is a sh*tty place" ... grow up lad and piss off to Sydney where you can join the every growing crime rate ... just make sure your kids are safe in school.
