Question to residents of Cronulla, Woolooware and Nth Caringbah,

Can we not arrange a survey of our own?

And of course have the right questions.

i.e Do you think the development would be beneficial to local job opportunities Yes / No

Would you be in favour of a closer venue for shopping and medical facilities. Yes No

Are you concered about the sprawl of industry along the northern side of Captain Cook Drive.

I think a survey can be arranged, a door knock one, face to face.

those questions cannot be asked quigs.

eg. Job opprotunites cant be asked of a non-expert. Its like asking a resident if the amount of flue cases will decrease this year due to vaccinations.

It has to be asked in non-bias, neutral terms

The one that would stand is the question are you in favour or against the development in its current configuration. A yes or no answer would suffice.

Overall , the study needs to be properly designed & recorded & the results must be compared to surveys from different areas that have had similar projects. Also the sample of respondents MUST be indicative of the overall demographic of the shire.

Speakmans study must have set out a hypthesis that the development will be beneficial to the Shire. it is up to him to prove statistically that there is enough information to reject his hypthesis.
This is not about who opposes or who is for. This is about an elected member supporting something that will or will not benefit the community.

So from the top;
Hypothesis: The Sharks development will be of benefit to the residents of the Sutherland Shire"

from this point , we design our questions so that residents responses either agree or reject our hypothesis. We can also eliminate bias respondents.

eg.

Are you directly involved in the development activity? Y = eliminated

Do you expect possible employment opportunities for yourself if the Sharks development proceedsin its current format?

Do you expect possible business opportunities for yourself or your business if the Sharks development proceeds in its current format?

Have you seen the plans for the current Sharks development? N=eliminated

From those plans what are your feelings as the aesthetic design & impact of the development to the area on CC drive? very Poor ---poor---average-----good-----very good

From a well designed study, you will actually get a correct result of what the electorate really wants & thinks, even if they are actually against the proposal.

for instance
I maybe against the proposal becaue I dont want 3 years of trucks in my streets. However, I own an electical business & will probably get lots of construction & then ongoing work from this development.

I would love to see this so called study of Speakmans. I would tear it to pieces.

The developers have survey forms and these have been distributed by the club at all information nights, the question was a simple Y/N for the development in its current format. They would outnumber the Speakman survey by a large amount, and would probably be favouring the development.

They could easily be used to counter this argument of Speakmans, but I dont think its wise for the club to make them public.

400 people showed up to rally in support, if that isnt passion, I dont know what is. It is my belief (and that of the developer) that the opposition is mainly a vocal minority of immediate local residents who have got some gravity to their cause because the deputy mayor is one of them. Speakman is just covering his arse, when it is approved he will be down there to cut the ribbon and wax lyrical about the great opportunities it presents.

Ive spoken alot of the main players at length. These guys are the experts and they firmly believe that the development will be approved on its merits (I know hes paid to say that, but he was levelling with me). At the very, very worst they might have to cut a few levels off the residential tower. I take ALOT of heart from the fact that this individual developer got the Rhodes Shopping Centre precinct over the line and they have applied the same professionalism and thorough approach to the DA as they did with Rhodes.

Sweet.

Nothing received by myself, parents or grandparents.

It is possible, if it was a crappy bit of paper my parents and I missed it, tossing it out. However no way my dear ol' Nan would do that. She'd go through and catalogue every piece of mail I'm sure.

Frenzy.

Yes you can use the GIPA act to request such information under the freedom of information principle.

I work on a lot of construction projects and people almost never respond to things when they are in favour of them but are far more likely to when they oppose it. So to have only marginally over 300 people respond in opposition to it I think is not a bad result.

Also as Eion said you ask the people living next door if they want it and you know the answer you will get, no-one likes any construction in their backyard.

GIPA won't apply unless it can be established Speakman was acting on behalf of the government and any documents related to the "survey" are held by the government. He would just say he was acting on behalf of his constituents.

Also, it's too late to get an answer before 5th December when submissions close. The request wouldn't even be out of the in box by then.

NSW Ombudsman might be more useful.

Everyone can agree that if the development doesn't happen, the sharks are farked. So basically the decision on the development is a decision on the sharks.

I like to lol@50uffs as much as the next person, but when there was a decision on 50uffs they had 70,000 turn up.

You can harp on all you like "but but but we only expected 200!", it just shows how few people care about the sharks that expectations were set so low. Its not as if it was a spur of the moment thing, Dread made the thread here 3 weeks in advance of the rally and the facebook stuff was the same. It got a run in the tele (on saturday or sunday, dunno which) and while it didn't get huge media attention, it's because it didn't warrant it. You didn't expect many, the media didn't expect many and basically no one came.

Huge backfire imo. To everyone else the decision on the development is the decision on the sharks, and only 400 people cared enough to march along a footpath from one car park to another.

I think Cleary might like to clarify that Souffs were actually booted out of the comp by then. How many years was it Cleary. I remember because did my bit for souffs too. I boycotted the league for the entire time they were unfairly removed from the League.

That was an injustice big time. A rort of rorts and a lot of League people not only Souffs but others took up arms.

Our rally was for a proposed development of a large block of vacant land just down from an industrial area.

Even a Souffs supporter can spot the difference between the two events. But we are up against a very noisy minority that are talking sh!t and this sh!t should be countered.

That is what 400 people did.

I know what you are saying Frenz, but that is not the point. The point is there is a very god chance he has not presented the findings in a truthful manner. If that is the case, he can kiss his career & his seat goodbye. Even now, I expect he will not get voted in again no matter whether the devel goes ahead or not. 10,000 members of the sharks leagues club & 4000 football club members & friends & family.
There should be a concerted push, to get rid of both him & Morrison, starting now.
A bi-election forced by misreresenting a tax payer funded study could be fun too.
How to vote cards should already be designed.

I think cleary is quietly shitting himself that this will get through .

lol I don't care. I grew up in the shire and loved the rivalry. Still do.

Couple of other forums I'm on is saying the same thing. It was a disappointing turn out and agree with the guy who thought it might backfire.

I know theres a difference, but essentially it is/was both clubs fighting for survival. One rally got 175 times more people then the other.
