Quigley factor

He has only played 12 matches this year in PL.
He was only in the starting lineup for 10 of them.
We won 8 of those 10 - including 6 of our last 7 when he was fully fit.

He had the same effect last season as well - with a dramatic difference in our win/loss record when Quigs played.

I saw an article about Luke Walsh in the free paper they give away at games where he said the team turned around when Quigs played and got the whole team on the front foot.

Johns said in the paper yesterday that the team loved to play with Quigs - and that is basically what Walsh said too.

I'd say that at 24 he is in the form of his life and is ready to really make his mark in firstgrade.

He has played 40 games of firstgrade - which is about the number many players need to really feel at home in firstgrade.

My conclusion - he will not be the weak link many feel he could be - in fact - he could well be one of our best.

I have no doubt quigley is all heart, and little raw talent. But thats not neccearily a bad thing, he can tackle like a man possessed.

Defence wins games, and I think Quigley being a tackling machine will be great for us.

Is Quigley an 80 minute player? If he is not who will replace him at hooker when he comes off the field. Even if he is an 80 minute player, as someone mentioned before, he has only played something like 10 games this year so he would be a little down on match fitness. Is this something to be worried about? I'm not doubting Quigley's abilty no doubt he will give it everything hes got but if he runs out of steam then what happens?

Yep I agree Quigs wont let anyone down, I can't think of a game in first grade that he's had where he's played poorly. I think we are huge chance of beating the Broncs.

I don't think it's the lack of bedsy/inclusion of quigs that it hinges on, moreso the commitment of our forwards and kidley's game.

In Quigley we have a hooker who is like the majority of other hookers out there. Our game won't suffer because he is in the team rather than Buderus, but it will bring us back to the pack a little bit.

On another note- are we now officially a two-man team? Pundits have written us off because Buderus won't be in the team, so does that mean we now officially rely on a player other than Johns???

It's always been a little like that, Buderus' game compliments Johns' to such an extent that it gets taken for granted at times. Having said that, Quigley is about as good a PL hooker as we could have to step up. I just hope our forwards match the Broncs up front til they tire a little.

People talk about Quigley doing 40 tackles a game being a good thing.
It isn't.
It means that the opposition think he is a weak defender and run at him - a lot.
They need to put Quigs next to Simmo in defence.
Simmo doesn't make big numbers in defence every week - because very few forwards think to themselves 'I just run at Simmo and see if he can't put me in hospital'.
Quigs will do his best - but every once in a while a Webke or a Carrol will run over the top of him - and we need to be aware of that.

So how about guys like Hindmarsh and Tongue who make 40+ tackles every game? Some players get targeted, but others go looking to make tackles- I think that Quigley falls into the latter.

Simpson was fourth on the tackling list this year so I don't think that people have avoided him that much. Plus he will only have one good shoulder this week so putting him next to Quigley who is a "weak" defender might not be the best option.

Of course, that goes without saying. Even the best defenders in league get ran over at times.

Riley Brown will be on the bench to work in tandom with Quigley out of dummy half. Although Quigley is obviously the better player at hooker, Brown could add an extra attacking option in the game particlarly around Brisbane's larger less mobile forwards towards the later stages of the game after Quigley has tackled himself to a standstill.

I wouldn't be surprised also to see Kurt try a few dummy half runs as well.
But I agree with keeney this game depends on how well our forwards match up against Brisbane's.

I would love to see both Quigley and Brown on the field at the same time running a lot of mousetrap plays- really put those broncos forwards in two frames of mind:lol:
