Parramatta Eels mourn the passing of Norm 'Bubbles' Sivyer

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels are sad to announce the passing of club stalwart Norm Sivyer at Norwest Private Hospital, Baulkham Hills at age 89. The Parramatta Eels will wear black armbands for Norm in their match against the Brisbane Broncos tomorrow night and Funeral details will be posted soon.

Norm, know to most as 'Bubbles', gave the club more than 40 years of loyal service and was still working in a voluntary capacity when he was hit by ill-health several weeks ago. He would be at all training sessions minding the players' gear and at home matches and the Sun-Herald newspaper did a fitting tribute to him in the lead-up to last year's grand final.

Sivyer, for many years the secretary of the strong Parramatta Easts (later called Parramatta City) club, first became involved in the Eels in the late 1950s when he served one year on the Eels committee before going back to serve his time in the junior league.
In 1963 he was elected as the players' delegate on the committee and has continually played some sort of role in the club ever since. For years he was a selector or provisional selector, sifting through the many triallists and deciding who should be graded. He was a member of the football advisory committee for two decades until it was disbanded in 2000 when the Leagues Club took control of the NRL entity. He has been the manager of dozens of lower grade teams, managed the sin-bin in more recent seasons and for one year was patron of the club. For many of those years he worked as a boilermaker on the NSW Railways.

In the new millennium, while enjoying retirement from work, he carried out myriad odd jobs, from preparing the medical room to relieving the sin-bin officer on game days and during the week he'd prepare sandwiches for the players, mind their car keys and valuables while they train at nearby ovals (they called him the "key-keeper"), sorting mail in the office or generally lending a hand. His enormous loyalty has earned him life membership.

CEO Paul Osborne passed on his sympathies to the family of Norm and paid a fitting tribute to a very popular part of the Eels environment for generations of players and officials. "Norm was loved by everyone at the Club; he'd enjoy a laugh and gave plenty of cheek and the players were particularly fond of him. it won't be the same without him around," Osborne said. "The loyalty and devotion of behind the scenes people like Norm Sivyer are the lifeblood of footy clubs. He was a part of the place for over four decades and we'll miss him dearly."
-----------------------------

What a sad, sad day for our Club.. Bubbles was to the Eels what Air is to Humans.. He was the lifeblood of the Club for such a very long time. Most are aware of his recent illness and this may not be such a surprise, but nonetheless, the World and the game lost a gentleman and they'll both be poorer for it.

R.I.P Bubbles.

G,day Mate I went up to the hospital yesterday afternoon and spent time
with Norm he was not well and concerned that they were transfering him to a nursing home at North Parramatta today where he would of had to share a room ,he was also upset that not many people had been up to see him since he went there,he was deressed when I left him but I had no idea that we would lose him today.
We have been friends since I first met him in 1952 I will certainly miss him.

Have known Norm on and off for 30 years, what a great and loyal Eel.

Won't be the same without Bubbles sitting at doors and smiling at the players carrying on
