We scored length of the field tries v NQ and Canberra. Our speed is fine it's more the poor reads and contact in defence for me

I think Dallin would be among the quicker wingers running around. But obviously a notch below the true speedsters and probably 5 notches below James Roberts. Johnson would run down any player in our team and Dallin pretty much knew he was getting run down and looked to be a bit slower hoping for support and not wanting to take a chance with the sideline.

I'm happy he played it safe. If the score was different or the clock was he might have tried beating the tackles like he did on Thurston against the Cowboys. But if he tried that here it could have cost us.

I note that Kata has been pinged for his high shot on Soward immediately preceding the DWZ try. One week even if he pleads guilty, thanks to carry overs. Not before time, either. Soward cops one of these just about every week.

This NYC team is really something else. 70 points in consecutive games and they only conceded 4 tries total in that time. Add to that they were missing Clark, Jennings, Luai and Luke all who are certain starters and it is very impressive.

As much as I love seeing one of our grades dominate I hope some of those kids are rotated through NSW cup now that the SG ball season is done.

A bit more speed would be nice but like Franklin said i don't think it's a key issue. Our support play needs to improve for one. Intercepts are hard to support but it we had guys pouring down field in support it's not such an issue. If we can get this backline some games together, hopefully they'll start to anticipate what the guy around them can and will do a bit better. Our issue in the 20 is with the set up. Give the outside backs the ball with a bit of space and their passing skills and ability to shrug of tackles will make up for any lack of speed.

Yeah our defence and support play are the main two areas I think we need to improve in. Guys like Merrin and Cartwright or even Latimore should always have someone trailing them. Seggy is pretty good in that regard, between the halves, hooker and fb there should always be one of then hanging around the ruck looking for the offload.

If there's an issue it's more acceleration than sheer pace.

Rare you have to score 50m+ tries , its the acceleration in beating a man close to the line that's more important.

I would think Segyaro is the only player with real acceleration in our team. He is very explosive. The rest of the boys, including DZW and Mansour need a bit of time to wind up. Soward had it in his 20's he could really motor over that first 20m. The last really quick backs we had were Jenko and before him Rhys Wesser. They both had similar 40m times.

In 2003, Rhys was just greased lightning and burnt plenty of players with his acceleration. I can still see in my minds eye, the Canterbury players expressions of "WTF was that?" when Ryhs zoomed past them from dummy half to score a try from over half way. Happy days. On the plus side, now I have time to make a cup of tea if we make a break and still get back in time to see the try.....

To be fair Shaun Johnson would only be behind James Roberts for speed in the whole NRL

Yeah over 100m he is going to run down 98 percent of the Comp. You guys can check the highlights and decide for yourselves but I don't think Lolohea would of got him outside of an ankle tap or something.

Lol I said that in the main forum. I don't think we would beat them but we would certainly test them! That side on the weekend had 6 guys under 21...If our NYC team was fully healthy and included JFH well it would be fun to watch. Guys like Sims and Uate would be very hard for the kids to handle though.

Would your under 20s side beat newcastle?

Way way back in the very early days we had a great 3rd grade/Under 23 team and a piss poor reserve grade that were getting flogged every week. So they had them play one another. The reserve grade won as they liked.

It would be the same even if a good NSW Cup side like Mounties played Newcastle. The Knights would smack them. The gap between first grade and reserve grade is vast.
