Buderus out of Broncos clash
Saturday, May 26, 2007 - 5:11 PM
Newcastle have been dealt a massive blow ahead of their NRL clash against Brisbane with skipper Danny Buderus ruled out with a foot injury.Already without injured NSW utility Kurt Gidley for the match at Suncorp Stadium, the Knights continued to count the cost of Wednesday's State of Origin with Buderus' withdrawal.
And they may yet suffer another blow, with Blues backrower Steve Simpson in doubt with a calf strain.
If Simpson is ruled out, it would leave halfback Jarrod Mullen as the only one of Newcastle's four NSW Origin players available to back up against the Broncos.
Buderus, the NSW and Newcastle skipper, failed a fitness test after CT scans on Friday revealed a chipped bone in the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.
Buderus sustained the injury in NSW's 25-18 loss to Queensland on Wednesday.
A Knights spokesman said it was not clear how long Buderus would be out for, but insisted the injury wasn't serious.
"He's feeling some discomfort at the moment and it's a bit sore. We'll see how it goes on a week by week basis," the spokesman said.
Gidley could miss anything between four and 12 weeks after suffering a grade-three tear in his left shoulder in his Origin debut. He will travel to Sydney on Monday to see whether or not the injury requires surgery.
Simpson will travel with the team to Brisbane and likely have until Sunday to prove his fitness after struggling with a calf strain.
Mullen has no injury worries, but may need to overcome a few mental scars from his Origin debut.
The 20-year-old was critical of his own performance in the series opener on Wednesday, and with Buderus out will likely have to carry more responsibility for the Knights.
"This is step one for Jarrod in the get over it stakes," said Newcastle coach Brian Smith.
"We all have to do that in footy and life's been pretty much a bowl of cherries for him so far.
"He's on the up and up and he's had a disappointment, not so much in his own form, I thought he did okay, he certainly looked the part, he didn't look over-awed and physically he wasn't intimidated.
"But he's such a high standard setter, particularly in his own performance, that it just doesn't sit well for him."
