Rabbitohs v Sea Eagles preview

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

http://nrl.com/News/MatchReports/MatchReportsArticle/tabid/336/NewsId/6625/Default.aspx
It’s official: the Rabbitohs’ 10 wins makes season 2007 their best since they last made the finals in 1989 – and if they can snag a couple of wins from their final three games they’ll find themselves playing semis again.
But their task looks a pretty daunting one, given first up they meet the high-flying Sea Eagles who are embroiled in a thrilling battle for the minor premiership, just two points adrift of pacesetters the Storm.
The Rabbitohs have won three of their past four; they stumbled to an unexpected loss to the Panthers in round 21 before dusting themselves off and heading to Wollongong, where their first ever victory over the Dragons at WIN Stadium – and their first over the Dragons in 10 years – now sees them in ninth position but level on points with the seventh- and eighth-placed Broncos and Wests Tigers.
Joe Williams retains his place at five-eighth; after an indifferent year that’s seen him make just 11 appearances and dropped from the Rabbitohs’ roster for next year, Williams is playing for his future. He knows he has three weeks to impress locally or perhaps in Europe.
With the Storm struggling for rhythm, the Sea Eagles now look the benchmark team in the comp.
They’ve won their past six games, arresting a mini-slump that saw them drop three of four, and with limited injuries are playing with purpose and flair.
Steve Menzies has been named in the centres but with Steve Matai still sidelined expect him to swap five-eighth duties with Jamie Lyon; it’s worked a treat for them over the past fortnight.
Nathan Merritt is growing into a heck of a player. Last year he topped the NRL try-scorer’s list on the wing; most recently he forced David Peachey out of the No. 1 jersey, providing the Bunnies with some straight, hard-running at the back.
Plus he has 10 tries this year. But it’s his defence that has earned the rave reviews lately, with his match-saving grassing of the Dragons’ Chris Houston last week prompting Jason Taylor to declare: “That was our season right there.” It was his ninth tackle save all year.
Merritt is a confidence player with ambitions of representative honours; he’ll be looking to impress against incumbent Blues No. 1 Brett Stewart.
Watch out Rabbitohs: Sea Eagles veteran Steve Menzies is playing like it’s his first season in first grade, not his 15th. It doesn’t matter whether he’s slotting into the back row, scouting out wide in the centres or playing playmaker at five-eighth, “Beaver” is punishing opposition teams in both attack and defence.
He has eight line breaks in 10 games, plus three try assists.
His four-pointer last week moved him into third place on the all-time try-scorer’s list and he’s just one shy of second-placed Andrew Ettingshausen.
Where it will be won: The battle of the bench: both sides have great impact players who could prove decisive if it’s close.
The Rabbitohs are a much better attacking unit with Dean Widders coming on as a replacement.
His stint in the run-on team coincided with a patchy period for the Bunnies, but last week he reverted to the bench and played solidly, making a line break and an offload and more than 10 metres with each of his seven runs.
That said, the home side is trumped by the likes of Adam Cuthbertson, who last week made 16 runs for 135 metres, 12 tackles an offload and a try in just 40 minutes, and Jake Afamasaga, who gained 127 metres from 11 runs, with 14 tackles and a try from 47 minutes.
The History: Played 117; Rabbitohs 53, Sea Eagles 64. The Sea Eagles have won six of the past eight games, including the only clash at Telstra stadium in 2003.
Curiously, given the golden point theatrics of last week, these teams have never played out a draw…
Conclusion: The signs are ominous for the Bunnies – against the Knights, Manly compiled their best first half of football in their past 43 matches, heading to the sheds 26-0.
They will be looking to build on their already solid combinations and should have too much strike-power out wide, where Brett Stewart, Michael Robertson and Chris Hicks have a combined 34 tries.
It will be interesting to see how the Rabbitohs’ right-side defence holds up.
To date it’s been pretty good – having given up just 18 of the 60 tries scored against them.
But against the Sea Eagles they come up against the second-most potent left-side attack (behind the Storm), with 42 tries scored.
Finally, the Brookie boys have won 11 of their past 14 games at night. They’ll make it 12 here.
Match officials: Referee – Sean Hampstead; Sideline Officials – Bernard Sutton & Jeff Younis; Video ref – Graeme West.
Televised: Foxsports 3 – Live 7pm.

This is our season right here...biggest game of the year so far!

i disagree, we got the tigers and the rorters left, in the predicted top 8, no one had us beating manly in making the top 8, if we win, we only need to win 1 of the last two games.

if we beat manly monday, the roosters are pretty much gawn.

Watch out Manly- Dont tackle Nathan Merritt too hard or he will claim it as a hate crime on a sacred site.

Manly halfback Matt Orford is in doubt to face Souths with a quad injury after being unable to train all week, but Travis Burns remains a chance of returning from a back injury. Souths are expected to be as named.

I hope Orford plays. Monaghan is better in the 7 and I like the look of Ballin. There's more chance of putting Orford off him game than Monas IMO. And we all know what happens when the blowtorch is applied to Orford!

Still pulling that myth out.

Anyway, even if he is choker, this game means pretty much nothing to us. Therefore zero pressure = zero choking.
