Broncos v Raiders preview

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Are we witnessing the Broncos’ demise as a finals team after seeing them in 15 straight years of finals series?
Are we seeing a reigning premier miss the following season’s finals for the third straight season?
The answer is almost certainly a yes if the Brisbane boys can’t overcome a plucky Raiders outfit who still have slim finals dreams of their own.
It’s true that the Raiders would need a miracle to be involved past round 25 – they would need to win both remaining games and hope for several other results to go their way but while there is life there is hope for the 12th-placed side.
While the Broncos could also still feature in the finals, if they lose this clash it would be highly unlikely considering a last-round trip to Parramatta.
Short of a draw between the Wests Tigers and South Sydney, a win will put the Broncos back into the top eight at the expense of the loser from Leichhardt Oval, thanks to a better differential, so the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Winger Craig Frawley is out from the side that lost a heartbreaker to the Bulldogs last week, with Joel Moon coming into the centres and Darius Boyd moving to the wing. John Te Reo has been added to the bench.
For the Raiders it will be the same side that upset the Warriors in Canberra last weekend, with Ben Jones added as an 18th man.
Watch out Broncos: The Raiders might be fragile defensively but they are still missing less tackles than the Broncos.
Missed tackles are continuing to crucify any chances the Broncos have – they missed 68 against the Bulldogs last week, the third most by a team this season.
The Broncos continue to miss more tackles than any other NRL club, averaging a mammoth 44.23 missed tackles per match.
With the likes of Todd Carney (who last week contributed 11 kicks for 286 metres, six runs for 34 metres, 17 tackles, one line break a try and three conversions) running the attack and prop Scott Logan (14 runs for 94 metres, 11 tackles, four tackle breaks, a line break and a try) in career-best form, the Green machine has enough firepower to continue the Brisbane misery if they don’t stiffen up.
Watch out Raiders: Brisbane can be dangerous from all over the park – they have scored 15 tries from over halfway this season and the Raiders have conceded just as many from the same distance.
While an extensive injury toll has stunted their effectiveness they still have the elusive Justin Hodges at fullback, a player who can trouble any side from anywhere on the park. Hodges averages 166 metres a match, has 15 line breaks, 114 tackle breaks and has scored 10 tries.
Where it will be won: Brisbane can control this contest if they turn up with the right attitude.
They are a stronger unit with a much better chance of being part of this year’s finals series and if they can muscle up in defence it will choke the Raiders out of the match.
The young Canberra side can’t help but leak points but if you give them a chance to put some tries on the board they can get in a point-scoring gun fight, something they are very good at.
They don’t care if the opposition scores 30 points, they’ll just aim for 31.
The History: Played 32; Broncos 18, Raiders 13, drawn 1. The Broncos have won three of the past four but it was the Raiders who won the last encounter – a 30-18 win last season in Canberra.
Conclusion: Wayne Bennett’s side have a very proud tradition of being involved past the regular season and if that is to continue they’ll need to be ready to play come Sunday.
As easy as it is to admire the Raiders’ efforts this year, they are still struggling to perform away from home having won just two of 11 matches on the road, so lean towards the home side in this one.
Match officials: Referee – Shayne Hayne; Sideline Officials – Rod Lawrence & Tony De Las Heras; Video ref – Graeme West.

Raiders have got a few penalties in a row now, but they've made some dumb decisions on attack

Brisbane maybe score off a dubious call
im being told (admittably by raiders fans) that the broncos player was held for an age before passing
