LUI AND ELLIS IN DOUBT FOR EELS BLOCKBUSTER
By Wayne Cousins

Sunday, 21 March 2010
Wests Tigers will assess the fitness of half-back Robert Lui and second-rower Gareth Ellis in the build up to the round three blockbuster against the Parramatta Eels at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday, March 26.
Coach Tim Sheens admits Lui (ankle) and Ellis (cork) are in doubt after suffering the injuries in the round two loss to the Sydney Roosters.
Lui rolled his ankle early in the first half and could hardly run before having a needle at half-time.
“He was inconvenience by it. Robert went back out after half-time but it was not better, so I had to interchange him (in the second half),’’ Sheens said.
“He was a bit of a passenger in the first half which exposed our right edge a little bit.
“Gareth was the same. Gareth has got a bad cork which stopped him from running. He was really struggling.”
With Lui replaced in the second half, Sheens shifted full-back Tim Moltzen to half-back. Moltzen immediately sparked the attack and combined well with five-eighth Benji Marshall.
Moltzen played a major role in Wests Tigers’ charge to the finals late last season after moving from full-back to half and could be the early favourite to wear the seven jersey against the Eels should Lui not pull through.
The positive news for Wests Tigers is that prop Bryce Gibbs, second-rower Liam Fulton, prop Todd Payten and winger Beau Ryan should return for the Eels game.
A hamstring injury saw Gibbs miss the Roosters clash, allowing rising young prop Andrew Fifita to make his NRL debut.
Fulton was still named in the team an hour before kick-off before being ruled out by club doctor Donald Kuah through illness. It meant talented young second-rower Jason Schirnack, who played for Balmain in their NSW Cup win over Western Suburbs on Saturday, the chance to make his NRL debut.
Schirnack and Fafita - two of the gun players from the Wests Tugers U20s team last year - managed to score a try each in their NRL debut.
“Liam had been crook all week,’’ Sheens said.
“He became ill and we just couldn’t risk playing him in the conditions. He wanted to play but he was crook during the warm up.”
Payten will play his first premiership match for 2010 should he overcame a calf injury.
Sheens said he was pleased with the performances of the debutants as well as Englishman Mark Flanagan in just his second NRL match.
“I thought Fafita was fairly strong in his second stint,’’ Sheens said.
“Carrying the ball is one thing, defending is the thing that we want and we want people who can do both.
“I thought Mark Flanagan, thrown in at the last minute and considering the conditions and where the kid is from, did well. Mark put his body on the line defensively.”

Tuqiri not ready for fullback role yet: coach

GLENN JACKSON

March 22, 2010
WESTS TIGERS coach Tim Sheens is reluctant to shift Lote Tuqiri to fullback to play Parramatta on Friday night even though halfback Robert Lui will probably miss the clash.
Lui rolled his ankle in yesterday's 44-32 loss to the Roosters and Sheens conceded he was unlikely to play against the Eels. Sheens could shift fullback Tim Moltzen to halfback and Tuqiri, two games into his return to the NRL after seven years in rugby union, to fullback, which would set up a positional clash with Parramatta's Jarryd Hayne.
But Sheens said he would prefer not to rush Tuqiri's switch to No.1, even though he showed further positive signs from the wing yesterday, scoring a 60-metre try.
''It's probably a bit early for that, but I'll have to have a look at how things happen during the week with injuries,'' Sheens said. ''I'll just have to weigh up Lui's issue and whether or not he's fit enough to play.
''I don't want to do that to Lote at the moment but he wants to get involved. It's a bit different, though, when you're back there for 80 minutes. I don't think I'd go to the big fella just yet.''
More likely is the elevation of Arana Taumata or Blake Lazarus - the current halves pairing for the unbeaten Balmain NSW Cup side.
''I'm not totally out of options, rather than shake the whole thing up just yet,'' Sheens said.
Sheens is likely to have a stronger squad on hand for the club's clash with the Eels. Forward Todd Payten (calf) and winger Beau Ryan (suspension) are due to return, along with Bryce Gibbs (hamstring) and Liam Fulton (virus).
Gibbs and Fulton were ruled out of yesterday's clash just before the game. Fulton fell ill in the warm-up, prompting Sheens to play debutants Andrew Fifita and Jason Schirnack.
''We just couldn't risk playing [Fulton] in the conditions,'' Sheens said.
He was willing to cut his side some slack for conceding so many points in the heat - but not much.
''I'd like to think we're not going to put that performance together again but we've given up 44 points,'' Sheens said. ''It's not good - not for a first-grade side.''

Interesting that Kissing Cousins is talking Moltzen up for half-back, but Simply Sheens is not...

Id like to see him Try Tuamata at fullback and Moltzen at 7, if this combo works then leave them there. He cant keep changing player positions week in week out to cover 1 injury.

i'd be happy to lay off sheens for a few weeks if tomato gets a run at half or lazarus plays we can always swap him to fullback mid game and moltzen to half

1. Lazarus/Taumata (leaning towards Taumata as Lazarus is a better half and Taumata is a runner which is apparently what supercoach wants at FB)
2. Tuqiri
3. Ayshford
4. Lawrence
5. Ryan
6. Marshall
7. Moltzen
8. Gibbs
9. Farah
10. Galloway
11. Fulton
12. Payten
13. Heighington

14. Flanagan
15. Cayless
16. Fifita
17. Shirnack

If Sheens is moving Moltzen to halfback and not moving Lote, then, he should probably consider bringing Mullaney up for a go.

Giving him a crack here and there early in the season with minimal pressure so to speak would be a more ideal time to bring him in.

We'll all get a gauge as to how far away from being a permanent first grader he really is.

And after-all, he's a fullback, something we have sweet f**k all of.

Taumata is still listed as being injured for some odd reason.

I don't actually want to see Heighington at Lock or Fulton at Second Row.

I'd like to see Fifita and Shirnack get a start and have Heighington and Payten on the bench. Some older heads coming on a bit later against the experienced pack of the Eels is probably a better idea.

Cayless seems to be wasting a bench spot. Flanagan is getting better each week imo, maybe he could even get a go in the 13.

Taumata is not injured, he's played two games of State Cup for Balmain at five-eighth. Lazarus has been at half.

Thanks MU, His size wouldnt be a issue for fullback then. Have you seen them play this year hibrid? If so how are they going.

I know he's not injured.

But according to Big League, wherever they get their f**ked up info from (Probably Sheens), he is still injured.

not at all mac, he's taller and heavier than Hodgo ever was.

if he is safe under the high ball and knows how to position himself, then he'd make a gun fullback imo

this. although i wish we could get rid of heighno, damn he was rubbish yesterday.
as much as i'd like to see tuqiri at fullback, he simply doesn't have the match-fitness yet.

I think you'll find he'd be more inclined to go with

6 Fitzhenry
7 Marshall

or possibly
6 Fulton
7 Marshall
12 Flanagan
