R5 v Eels

I'm going to play devils advocate here, but I thought the second half was excellent. We made 3 errors in the entire half, one was after a kick on the last (Richards), one was after the play broke down after a kick (Tedesco) and one was unforced (Lawrence). We also conceded 0 penalties. On the flipside Parra gave us nothing for a lot of the half, but once Watmough dropped that ball we went after them. They through nothing at them and it was clear JT knew a try would probably be enough if we didn't invite them into the game. Sure it wasn't pretty, but in years past we would have tried to blow them away from the word go, and we'd have copped cheap tries, and probably lost the game 18-16. We've been saying for years we want the team to grind out wins, well that's the type of performance we will be getting. If Melbourne won a game like that they'd be lauded for not panicking and wearing Parramatta down, but because we are renowned for fancy bs, we get bagged for going against type.

It amazes me that people still cling to the ides that the tigers are a razzle dazzle team. That boat sailed a good 2 or 3 years back.

Our pack is able to win the battle, just go forward and complete sets. I'd add that a more varied kicking game instead of the bomb would also help.

And Lawrence bad read/effort to let Peats in from dummy half.
Have another look, that was Lovett. Lawrence was to the other side of the play the ball.

Lawrence just did his job for once without too many f**k ups.
His defence was superb, he made a few good runs for a change and his passing game was the best its been in ages. He gave Naiqama a few decent half-chances, he managed to get one try out of it.

Just beause commentators said he made some good runs people want to parrot them and say how improved he was.
He was immensely improved, but as I said, he still has more improving to do.

It'll be interesting to see how he goes when he starts getting some quality service from his inside man.

Something he's suffered from horribly since Benji's shit form, our revolving door for players in the #6 jumper since he left and Moses' average early season form.

Bloody oath, couldn't agree more. I watched it again and was super impressed how patient and clinical we were. Taylor has completely turned the teams attitude around in 5 weeks! As someone else pointed out, just have a look at our points conceded tally. I'm loving this grinding style footy, it's the lack of grinding and toughing out games out that most on here have been bitching about the last 10 years.

My only criticism would be that I agree our constant stream of bombs was getting a bit tedious and we should have exploited a centre combination of Mau'u & Gower. In saying that it wasn't a game made for going sideways in attack and we obviously worked on a game plan all week and JT didn't want to move away from it. When was the last time we stuck to a game plan for 80mins?

We ground them down for 70mins and then blew them away in the last 10, sounds like a pretty bloody good game plan to me.

I thought both centres were very good with the opportunities given in attack and solid defensively.

The over read by Lovett was the only time they breached our line, we reduced offloads and line breaks and overall our line looked far more composed and patient.

By mid season we should have a decent record and that is when I expect the side to start hitting more consistent and polished attacking form

What is noticeable with our better defence this season is that the ball carrier is getting rolled onto his back or at least taken to ground which was sadly lacking in previous years.
If the WTare going to persist with these ordinary to average mid field bombs from Brooks and Moses, why not use Richards as an option to kick the ball on the last, i would bet he would nearly kick the ball into orbit which the opposition would dread.

Lawrence's repeat average performances don't do a good performance justice.

He was very good on the weekend, by far his best game in two years.

Admittedly Lawrence was good & for once we didn't leak pts down our right side where he defends but bear in mind the eels backline are sub-standard in attack.Apart from Norman (only because Moses is on L-plates re stage of 1st grade career) none of there backs would make our team.

Yeah Lawrence did better up against Ma'u in the centres. Was hardly going to be troubled by Ma'u.
If he couldnt have a solid game against Ma'u Id be worried.
