Illawarra still have a big say, considering the Wollongong junior base is huge. Maybe not in the front line, but behind the scenes for sure.
The Steelers Leagues side of the JV has lost a lot of its bargaining power.

Back in 1998, the Steelers board came out and said that due to crippling debt it would not be fielding a side in 1999. Since St George is a club with significant assets and cash but light on juniors (the increasing Asian population, who prefer soccer, between Hurstville - Kogarah and Riverwood has seen teams reduce junior sides i.e. Renown United at Mortdale when I played fielded 3 sides in U6's, now they only have one). When the merger happened, St George Leagues loaned Steelers Leagues upwards of $8m to pay off debts and players. As part of the JV agreement, the power was shared 50/50 and a St George jersey was to be used home and away (the old blood and bandages strip was used in a game vs Great Britain, as well as other seasons past prior to the Red V), with the Illawarra side represented by the remainder of the strip.

Last year, Steelers Leagues had still not paid off the loan from St George Leagues, resulting in Steelers selling 24% of their stake in the JV to the Gordon family, better known as the owners of WIN TV. Factor in the removal of Steelers references from the home strip (the shorts and socks are more representitive of St George), the Steelers board coming out with some truely stupid ideas (they wanted Ian Millward as coach ahead of Wayne Bennett because "he played for us"), and fans from the Illawarra tending not to travel to WIN Stadium, let alone home and away games in Sydney and interstate

Just because an area has a large number of juniors does not mean they will play for that club. As an example, the Stewart brothers are from Berkeley and play for Manly.

Ray Warren is great. Certainly better than every other commentator. If you think he sucks then you should also name who is better.

I must admit I raised my eyebrows when he was talking about Ben Creagh last night and said "If you're a fan of Matt Prior, you might like this guy" or something similar.

Pleeeese Rabs is still the best by a long way.

He calls the game, thats all he does, and thats why i love it.

I dont need a f**kwit like Gould to tell me what to think.
I dont need a f**head like Daley to tell me his legspeed.

I certainly dont need dopes like Tallis or Pearce or god forbid Wiz to explain football to me.

Dont even get me started on Ikin.

Voss is ok and second best of a really bad lot.

But i needs more rabs baby

Who does Ray support?

Parra.

A few years ago we were up in Brissie for the Saints vs Titans game and were having lunch-time beers in the pub when who should walk in but Rabs and Geoff Heugill. A little bit later some channel Nine lackey walks in and Rabs introduces him to Geoff in a booming voice the whole pub cold hear: "Steve, this is Geoff - and I tell you what, the merkin can swim".

I was in tears for hours after that.

Here's one from the weekend ...

I'm assuming David Middleton hands him a statistic ... it may have just been in Big League, I didn't pick it up ... he reads it and ends up saying something along the lines of Darius Boyd has played 50% of his time in the centres, 25% at wing and fullback and he's playing fullback as well or better than the others positions.

Boyd's a fullback, always has been, and while not everyone is going to know that, he's played the majority of his games on the wing. How many Broncos games would he have done in the last three years :?
