race in the nrl

Is a player with darker skin more easily dropped when their performance is below par than an Anglo Saxon player?

We have seen several instances where players who have performed on the field not get selected for rep duties ie mundine/blacklock/peachey and the list goes on. However, does it not seem the nrl have a higher tolerance for the incompetence of players with a "white" background when they are struggling.

Jamie soward helped my team (unfortunately for now the dragons ..) To its first premiership in years. Something the much hyped Barrett never was able to do. Yet Barrett was consistently selected for rep duties. Instead we showed him the door and brought in the biggest hack aka widdop. I'm curious...had Jamie played as badly as widdop. Had Jamie shown as big a lack a passion as widdop, would he have lasted as long?

Remember...we booted him not long after he helped us get into a final with amazing kicking and a clutch field goal. He helped set up the first try in the gf. He hit sideline conversions. He kicked us out of trouble . yet we boot him???

He then goes to the panthers. Gets them within a whisker of a final. (Again with a field goal). And they drop him?? Again I ask...what is Peter Wallace doing to keep himself on the team?

There seems to be a difference in how players are treated. Both in the media and the nrl. The burden for a player with darker skin to stay in a team is much higher.

That's my view. What do you guys think?

Sowards problem is that he is essentially an asshole who rubs his team mates the wrong way.

When no one in the dressing room is sad to see you go, the club probably made the right decision

There could be something in this, but it seems to me that the NRL loves its Aboriginal players - certainly the fans do.

Unfortunately the way the rugby league is now it suits the typical Aboriginal body type and style of play less and less. Chris Sandow is an example of a guy who should be a super star but he didn't take well to the NRL obsession with size, structure, wrestle. That more suits the Islander body types.
Its very sad because Aboriginals (and even more so PNG'ns) love Rugby League and I love the style of play they bring.

Unfortunately the NRL has become very monolithic in body type. The wingers don't look that much different to the front rowers.

I get the impression a guy with the build of a Larry Corowa or Chikka Ferguson wouldn't get much of a look now. Those skinny legs and slight just don't fit the mould.

The perfect NRL player is 190cm 105kg. Dude can then play anywhere from fullback to front row. Woot.

Watch the r13 Penrith V Melbourne. Then you will know why Soward was dropped. He has had 3 back operations in the last 12 months. The magic and the desire to excel at a NRL level is gone.

Yeh I've seen some great skilled young kids in SG ball who are super fun to watch but you just know they're never going to be big enough for NRL sadly.

Greg Inglis hasn't been dropped and he's been pretty average for us in the last 12 months.
I don't believe theres anything in it myself with the way the cap works coaches have can't afford to have talent sat on the benches.

Why do people always blame the race card whenever something doesnt go their way ? What a f**king stupid thread.

Coaches only care about winning football games. They dont care if the player is black, white, purple, or rainbow coloured, as long as they help win football games.

sure Sowie is indigenous, but does anybody really view him as indigenous? When i look at him i see an angry little midget in headgear; not as a person of colour

Greg Inglis should be reason enough for the entire original point of this thread to be ditched.

Soward has an attitude problem, lacks a sense of humour and rubs fellow players up the wrong way. Nothing to do with his race.

Jamie Soward has been an arrogant merkin that no one likes since he was a kid. Don't know anyone from Wagga or surrounds that likes him. Getting dropped for having an attitude problem is absolutely no surprise.

Jennings has been ordinary this year and was still picked for SOO

typical f**kwits like Bumdine always claimed Nathan Merritt was never selected for SOO because of racism. when he was picked we saw we hadn't been

Yes Mundine was such a victim. Getting overlooked for such pure white bred players such as Laurie Daley.

On a somewhat related note, I really miss the shifting eyes sarcasm smilie.

It's funny seeing people use inglis as an example that racism doesn't exist in the nrl. Yes...because he is quiet and unassuming. Doesn't have an opinion on anything and that's the way they like it.TThey don't like people with a bit of character. It's exactly like hayne said...in America they celebrate showmanship, over here they frown upon it. Guess why? Because the white players aren't capable of that natural flamboyance.they have to be serious and offer the same cookie cutter response in every interview.

God forbid a player show confidence in their ability and tell the world about it. God forbid the leading try scorer in multiple seasons who does backflips after scoring, being over looked for a nothing player in soo (and we ended up losing).

In 50 years the nrl will look very different the way basketball/football in america was once dominated by white players. The funny thing is...the racist media were lamenting how at the junior levels it's become unfair due to the size of islanders at that age. So it's not enough they want the nrl to stay white they want the jiuniors to be the same. Ha!
