race in the nrl

GW here,

Firstly, this is rubbish. No ones being dropped because of race. If anything, they are selected in rep teams BECAUSE of their race. AKA, the all stars game. I've also read quotes in the past wherein talent scouts look directly into the polynesian community to try and find the next generation, because of their natural size.

That said, there are other factors to this.

Generally darker skinned players are more inconsistent than white guys. Im nit talking about the top echelon of black players, but you are absolutely oblivious or lying to yourself if you havent noticed that these players are very hot and cold/flash in the pan. Good one day and rubbish the next. Usually rely on natural athletivism and fleet of foot. Uate, Jackson Kaufusi, Barba, I vould go on all day.

So in THAT respect, the quest to find the next Greg Inglis and Thurston has left many black victims in its wake, but thats not to be confused with any type of real negative racism.

Also worth mentioning that the NRL, like most pr sport now, is a meat market of white and black flesh. Players get elevated and dropped on a whim. The exception to this is the players with a decorated history like Brett Stewart or Rhys Wesser (to use white and black examples) who clearly in my eyes went for two seasons too long without being punted. Being a big name carries alot in the NRL. I'd have punted Brett for Tonm around this time last year personally.

Peter Wallace was as gone as Soward was and sooner too, but his change to hooker has impressed everyone and kept him in with a chance.

It's funny seeing people use inglis as an example that racism doesn't exist in the nrl. Yes...because he is quiet and unassuming. Doesn't have an opinion on anything and that's the way they like it.TThey don't like people with a bit of character. It's exactly like hayne said...in America they celebrate showmanship, over here they frown upon it. Guess why? Because the white players aren't capable of that natural flamboyance.they have to be serious and offer the same cookie cutter response in every interview.

God forbid a player show confidence in their ability and tell the world about it. God forbid the leading try scorer in multiple seasons who does backflips after scoring, being over looked for a nothing player in soo (and we ended up losing).

In 50 years the nrl will look very different the way basketball/football in america was once dominated by white players. The funny thing is...the racist media were lamenting how at the junior levels it's become unfair due to the size of islanders at that age. So it's not enough they want the nrl to stay white they want the jiuniors to be the same. Ha!
As others have already pointed out, if you are trying to make a stand against racism its best not to be racist yourself.

A quick look at the 2016 Kangaroos side, these are all quick checks I haven't to the time or the inclination to do a detailed history check on each player. I have put backgrounds rather than actual nationality before anyone tries to pick holes in it. I also know some indigenous players may have mixed backgrounds but again I'm not trying to draw a family tree.
I don't believe the argument that players from none Anglo/Irish backgrounds are being discriminated against when a google search says 74% of Australians can trace their ethnic backgrounds to the British Isles.

1. Darius Boyd (Assume Anglo/Irish)
2. Semi Radradra (Fijian)
3. Greg Inglis (Indigenous)
4. Josh Dugan (Assume Anglo/Irish)
5. Blake Ferguson (Indigenous)
6. Johnathan Thurston (Indigenous)
7. Cooper Cronk (Dutch surname I believe)
8. Matt Scott (Assume Anglo/Irish)
9. Cameron Smith (c) (Assume Anglo/Irish)
10. Paul Gallen (Assume Anglo/Irish)
11. Josh Papalii (Samoan/Cook Islands background)
12. Matt Gillett (Assume Anglo/Irish)
13. Corey Parker (Assume Anglo/Irish)
Interchange:
14. Josh McGuire (Anglo/Samoan/ Maori)
15. Michael Morgan (Assume Anglo/Irish)
16. James Tamou (Anglo/Maori)
17. Sam Thaiday (Indigenous)
18. Aidan Guerra (Italian)

Pommy, fairly on point, however I'm pretty certain that Corey Parker has a bit of coon in him.

Is a player with darker skin more easily dropped when their performance is below par than an Anglo Saxon player?

That's my view. What do you guys think?

Maybe it's a manifestation of their deeply held desire to go walkabout?

Just look at Jamal Idris, he formally requested a release from his contract so he could go walkabout.

Does racism exist in Australia? Undoubtedly
Does racism exist in sport? Absolutely
Is Rugby League racist? Maybe, in rare instances it can be - some of the fans definitely are - but overall I believe Rugby League to be one of the least racist sports I have come across.

Sure in the 90's there probably was some institutional racism with the NSW squad and that's why Inglis chose to play for Queensland but I believe the house has been well and truly cleaned and attitudes that led to that have long gone. And good f**king riddance.

The NRL is picking more and more and more Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Fijian and Papua New Guinean players
Teams from these countries have been invited into Australian competitions to assist growing the game in those Countries and creating pathways for more players to come into our comp. Would the game be doing this if racism was a large factor in the NRL?

In 2016 the Captains of both finalists were Aboriginal. The NRL celebrates Aboriginality every year both with the All Stars game and the Indigenous round. Would it do this if it were genuinely racist?

Yes there will be cultural differences - yes there will be disagreements between individuals and clubs
Yes some black players will be dropped or traded to other clubs. But the reasons for these may be multi faceted and I don't see they can be laid squarely at racist attitudes.

I don't think the topic of this thread is very accurate. There might occasionally be the odd sub-conscious thing going on, but nothing major IMO.

In western society, alot of people like to see racism where it doesnt exist. Or make vague assertions based on the smallest hint of a racial tinge. However thats a topic for the Four Corners forum.

The fact of the matter is is that there just isnt any racism in the NRL, and teams arent picked on anything other than what will win them games.

Does anyone really think that any coach in the NRL will risk their 400k+ plus a year job, just to keep a brotha down? If anyones principles are that strong, whether honourable or deplorable, They'd actually get alot of respect from me. Howevere it just doesnt happen!

Let's call a spade a spade, Soward hardly has "dark skin". He is an A grade Wanker who nobody likes and that is why he can only exist in teams that go well.

I find it hard to believe, despite what the likes of Anthony Mundine would tell you, that in this day and age of modern Australian sport that any player is dropped or not picked for rep duties because of their race.

Fans throwing around terms like 'coon' isn't exactly helping though is it?

With coaches under constant pressure for results who is that racist that they are willing to lose their job for the sake of it?
