Raiders commission Independent High Performance Review

29/08/2011 3:23:31 PM

The Canberra Raiders board has commissioned an independent High Performance Review of the organisation as a whole and into the workings of the club, to provide recommendations ahead of the 2012 season.
The High Performance Review will be conducted by John Waser, who has over 30 years’ experience working with elite sport specialising in career, education and sport.

Mr Waser said he would be joined by current Queensland Assistant Coach Michael Hagan, who will be in charge of reviewing the tactical side of the team’s preparation and performance.
“I’ll be working with Michael Hagan and we’ll develop a group of recommendations which will be presented to the board and they will then decide what to do from there,” Mr Waser said. “It’s great to work with Michael Hagan who has a lot of experience with not only the NRL but also with representative teams.”

Both Waser and Hagan will spend time at the club before the end of the 2012 season to gain an insight from all involved with the club, before a more extensive High Performance Review during a three day camp at seasons end.

The High Performance Review will also be giving members an opportunity to have their say on the season as well, with a survey to be sent to the clubs membership database in the coming weeks.

The final results will be compiled over the course of the Raiders off-season and presented to the Raiders board ahead of the 2012 pre-season.
“We’re looking at trying to improve the High Performance environment and we’ll be looking at all avenues from the top to the bottom. The board has given me an open door to see how we can improve the present situation,” he said. “It’s been a very disappointing year and they’re all very proud people and they want the situation to improve.”

Mr Waser said the process was all about improving the standards of the club as a whole and most importantly on field performance.

“There are a lot of very good people in the organisation working really hard and we’re here to see what we can do to improve and take them to the next step.” He said. “Of course it’s all about performance and we’ll be looking at the high performance environment. It comes down to winning and we want to make sure we provide the environment to produce those wins.”

The process commenced last week with Mr Waser overseeing the team’s preparation ahead of the final home match of the season and he said he would continue to observe preparations this week.

“We’ve started interviews with players, Coaching staff and support staff as well,” he said. “Any organisation at the end of a season or a certain period will have a review and this review is a bit more in depth than that and we’ll be speaking to everyone from the CEO to the board chair to the Captain through to the Head Coach.

“In sport it’s about performance and performance is very much about on the field and the high performance environment. At the moment it’s no secret that the teams at the bottom of the ladder and we don’t want to be there. So when I use the word improve, it’s about improving the performance to go up the ladder and win Premierships. That’s what the game is about,” he said.

Mr Waser confirmed the members of the club would also have a say in the review process and they will be notified shortly on how this will happen.
“The members are big stake holders in the club and we’re looking at the best way to deal with the Raiders members,” he said. “We have to make sure it’s realistic and find the best way to administer it. We’re working through that at the moment but we see them as important stake holders and they’ll have their say.”

Raiders Chairman John McIntyre said the appointment of Mr Waser for the High Performance Review was based around his experience and said it was important to have someone who has experience not only in sport but in the NRL.

“John Waser has a lot of experience working with National Sporting Organisations and international sport,” Mr McIntyre said. “He also knows Rugby League and the NRL and can benchmark us against other clubs and like Michael Hagan he has an understanding of the sport which is important.”

Mr McIntyre stressed that there would be no stone left unturned during the process and the board had asked for a thorough and honest account.
“He’s independent of the organisation and will give us an honest appraisal without fear or favour,” he said. “We as a board have given him the green light to speak to anyone and everyone he needs to, to improve the organisation for next season.

“The process has to begin now and not a few weeks post season, as we need to make sure we have all the findings in place and can look at implementing any changes before we commence the 2012 pre-season,” he said.

The review process will include the following:
• Observation of the last two premiership rounds
• Player surveyed and interviewed individually to gain their thoughts on the season
• Coaching and Support Staff to be interviewed
• Review of injuries and injury management
• Coaching to be assessed and recommendations made
• Members surveyed and results compiled
• Three day post-season camp for more extensive interviews
• Recommendations presented to Canberra Raiders Board

I'd say this was on the cards regardless of what the members think.

The usual suspects will bitch and moan that something will not be to thier liking.

This is a good idea but one thing Im not totally happy with is an employee been part of the review. Only benefit I see of Hagan doing it , is he should have inside knowledge of the club operations.

I also hope the board take on the findings , this Im sure we will never know , not that Id expect them to make it public anyway.

I wish my grass was emo too so it would cut itself.... Some people would cry regardless of what is done.... Would you like to try and find anything else to bitch about?

Raiders chairman John McIntyre remains adamant the positions of coach David Furner and chief executive Don Furner are under no threat despite the Canberra board calling for an investigation into why the club has flopped this season.

The two men commissioned to conduct the "independent report" will be on hand today when Canberra play the Canterbury Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium to observe the club's game-day procedures.

Both Michael Hagan and John Waser have been on the Raiders' payroll, with the ex-Newcastle Knights and Parramatta Eels coach working as an adviser to David Furner this year.

Hagan is reviewing the Raiders' football operations, while Waser, who acted as a careers adviser to the players several years ago, will examine how the club's management structure is functioning.

The move comes after The Sunday Telegraph was told there was a growing divide between coach Furner and some of the players.

McIntyre and chief executive Don Furner both denied there was a split within the club, reasoning poor results was the biggest issue.

"There's no witch hunts involved, we're all looking to see if there's some things we could have done better and for areas where we can improve," McIntyre said.

"If there was any player unrest in that regard, I wouldn't necessarily be the first to hear it, but I wouldn't be the last either."

McIntyre hit out at suggestions that family ties may prevent Don Furner from making hard calls on his brother's coaching future.

Under Furner's coaching this season, the likes of Bronson Harrison, Joe Picker and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs all submitted poor seasons.

Perhaps the fact all three signed new long-term contracts allowed them to slip into a comfort zone.

"We don't call those sorts of things nepotism, we out in the country area call that the family farm and that's something that's been tried and tested over centuries," McIntyre said.

"The brotherhood does not interfere in any way in their ability to perform in a professional and proper manner."

When Don Furner was asked about unrest between the players and the coach, he replied, "Sometimes those things can come out when you have a bad season. That all came out about Neil Henry last year but I don't think it's there this year. That happens everywhere when you're losing.

"I've been here when we've been way further up the ladder and there's been more disharmony."

A bit of an over- reaction. Where am I crying? I pointed out a negative and a positive for it.

I'll also point out that Hagan is on the Newcastle Knights board.
