You were obviously watching something else tonight because Mann was very good in attack and defence and the dropped pass you refer too I take it was the Mc Crone short pass behind him so blame the right person.
I agree that Mc Crone was good tonight and I said elsewhere that Nene had his best game tonight despite letting the first Raiders try manifest.
Stupid penalties at crucial moments were our downfall.
No OT, I was watching the same game and I saw Mann have an up and down game. He did some pretty good things and made a couple of poor mistakes. He didn't do anything amazing in my eyes but I was impressed with his elusivness and fight in attack. Mann was OK.
I kind of wish McGregor rested Dugan and played Mann at 1. I think that is his position tbh, if not the wing. Dugan is out of knick a bit as shown with his constant drop balls of late. Id have given him a couple of weeks to recuperate and get back to his best.

Love your optimism mate and it would be great for my tipping comp results if you end up being right ( just can't tip against them even though i know what the result will be). But i stuck my neck out at the start of the season and had us pegged for 13th spot, not sure if we can slip that far down from here, but a top 8 side.....dat's just dreamtime stuff brudder!
You may be right and most times I'm one of our biggest critics when we lose, but taking into consideration all our injury problems and no Frizell I saw sometjing in our blokes that hasnt been there for a while......and I'll go one step further and predict we will beat Manly...lets wait and see

It has been a very
Agree almost imposible to be positive when you would think they learn from previous mistakes, but not us, not under this current coaching staff.

Selections such a McCrone and Lafai says that Mary and Company are beyond repair.

As much as I love this team and will still continue to painfully watch....the season is OVER and we will miss the 8.

Penrith have 3 teams at home straight and should get 6 points in the next 3 weeks, whilst we play Manly next week.

It kills me to admit to my self that we deserve whats coming to us for all the disgustingly poor decisions we make off the field (retention, recruitment and resigning Mary)....as well as piss poor selections, tactics (do we f**kin have any????) and use of the interchange bench.
Yes its f&king frustrating but we had !lots go against us tonight but did not give up and the one who thinks he is worth a million a year SHOULD have scored!!

Terrible game of football really

Call me insane but I clutching onto a minute glimmer of hope mostly due to the efforts of Mann, Thommo, JDB, Ah Mau and McInnes...and the hope that Frizzell returns to the side 100%...Widdop was good in parts also but failed today to steer the side home...but he still done enough to give me hope....

Widdop still doesn't look 100% to me, but his effort can't be faulted. He also looks like he knows McCrone is hopeless so he's trying to do everything and overthinking his options.

Dragons fall to Raiders in nail-biter
By Martin Gabor, National Correspondent‌‌, ‌‌‌NRL.com

Fri 14th July, 10:00PM
A A

The St George Illawarra Dragons suffered a 18-14 loss to the Canberra Raiders at GIO Stadium, Bruce on Friday night.

A monstrous 40/20 by Aidan Sezer in golden point has powered the Raiders to a thrilling 18-14 win over the Dragons in extra-time with Elliott Whitehead's 84th-minute try enough to keep the Green Machine's season alive.

‌With his side pinned deep in their own end, the halfback launched a raking kick downfield that caught the back three off guard. From the ensuing set, big Dave Taylor popped a sumptuous offload to Whitehead who dived over to earn Canberra their first win in golden point from four attempts in 2017.

The Raiders had tried their best to lose with their playmakers putting in some woeful kicks throughout the 80 minutes, but when it mattered most, Sezer delivered the most important kick of the season to move his side within four points of the Dragons.

The Red V had looked the better side for most of the night with former Raider Paul Vaughan starring in his first match back from a calf injury with 208 metres at lock while hooker Cameron McInnes made a whopping 72 tackles.

It's not all good news for Canberra with representative forward Josh Papalii in hot water after he collected Josh Dugan high with an ugly shoulder charge that could see him spend the next few weeks on the sideline.

It would prove to be a telling moment in the match as Papalii stayed on the field while his State of Origin adversary was forced off for an HIA test and did not return.

The Dragons came with plenty of intent and dominated the early exchanges with 70 per cent of the ball but it was the Raiders who would strike first as exciting rookie Nick Cotric took advantage of a poor read in defence to cross after six minutes.

The visitors were clearly unperturbed by the early setback as Nene Macdonald split Canberra's big men from dummy-half and linked up with Gareth Widdop who strolled over to level the scores.

Joel Thompson went within a whisker of burning his former club when he raced through to ground a deflected grubber, but replays clearly showed the ball had slipped through his fingers before he had grounded it.

The Raiders wouldn't be so lucky moments later when Widdop floated a pass over the top to send Jason Nightingale over for his 102nd try in the NRL to give the Red V a 10-6 lead after 22 minutes.

A sustained period of pressure should have seen the Raiders draw level but skipper Jarrod Croker inexplicably lost control of a Josh Hodgson grubber that he would normally gobble up for breakfast.

A Widdop penalty goal to start the second half pushed the lead out to a converted try and it could have been worse for the Green Machine when Taane Milne popped a delayed offload to Dugan who coughed up the pill when he looked certain to score.

Despite losing their fullback and Kurt Mann to HIA tests, momentum was well and truly with the Red V until Sezer intercepted a pass from Widdop and ran 90 metres to level the scores against the run of play.

The deadlock didn't last long as Croker knocked over a tricky penalty goal to give Canberra a two-point cushion but Widdop quickly responded to make it 14-all with nine minutes left to play.

Canberra had first crack in the field goal shootout but came up empty-handed when Blake Austin narrowly missed a long-range effort and then Sezer had his attempt charged down.

Widdop had a chance at the other end but sprayed his left-footed attempt before the sides traded brain snaps as Hodgson chipped ahead for no one and Mann spilled the ball to surrender much-needed field position.

Austin had a glorious opportunity to ice the game but hooked his 30-metre effort just as the rain started to tumble down only for Widdop to follow suit in the final minute of regular time.

With both sides unable to pot a one-pointer, it was only fitting that the game would be decider by a golden try.

Canberra Raiders 18 (Nick Cotric, Aidan Sezer, Elliott Whitehead tries; Jarrod Croker 3 goals) def. St George Illawarra Dragons 14 (Gareth Widdop, Jason Nightingale tries; Gareth Widdop 3 goals) in golden point at GIO Stadium. Half-time: 10-6 Dragons.

Many will say it was the Sezer intercept that was the turning point (and then the 40/20 the clincher) but how we lost Dugan and Papali stayed on the field just before that was actual pivotal moment looking back at the match. We lost a rep player, they conceded a penalty deep down our end. How is that fair? Isn't that what sin bins are for? This will be the talking point in the wash up to this match.

Yep..cannot believe he wasn't put in the bin.. Will probably get suspended but that is no help to us now is it..

The other major point is we never seem to win Golden point or the close games. We just lack the killer instinct.

You may well be right mate, I hope so. But if we have one more win left in us this season, please, please, please let it be against the Donkeys at Suncorp.

That was disappointing for so many reasons a dud game of footy both teams looked as lost as each other soft mistakes. It was painful to watch really, it's no coincidence that ever since McGregor signed for another 2 years we have lost all but 2 games. Our kicking game is killing us badly.

I am the first to credit the Dragons effort and bravery tonight given the injuries and head injury assessments but we have to be realistic about the opposition. Mary thinks if we play like that we will "win most games". I strongly disagree. Keeping it in perspective, if you are a Canberra fan you are wondering how you got out of that one with the two points. Their most potent players were very quiet tonight and the rain didn't suit their style of play. It took two big plays from a B grader in Sezer to end the Dragons. We all didn't expect to win tonight which made the loss easier, and the fact we didn't give in, but it is certainly another season of excuses rather than a team that is in control.

This week is mistakes, intercepts and injuries. Against the Titans it was lack of execution and Origin drain. Next week it will be penalties or some other excuse. Mary and Widdop will sit there post match with the security blanket of signed contracts and a good start to the year, and a final appearance in 2015, when in reality we are purely making up the numbers. This is a big deal. Mediocrity has taken its hold on this club. 6 seasons and counting of excuses.

We beat Manly and I will eat my hat.

I didn't get to see the game and sadly am not disappointed about it. We have one 3 out of the last 10 games having beaten the Warriors, tigers and Newcastle Knights. Reality check: For 10 rounds we have been playing poorly (nothing to celebrate about our just winning against the bottom two team). Being "unlucky" or "playing better" doesn't deliver a win. We lost another one and we keep on losing. If the Knights can put in a full 80 minute performance at home then we may not win another game this year.

I see Mann as a long term prospect, glad he has been resigned. I am not going to enter into back and forths about whether he is great or just decent. He is no Mark Gasnier still his potential is great, and he will prove more effective than Aitken imo. Mann will probably reach new heights when (or more so, if) the team hits a bit of consistency, as other teams won't target him. This is just my opinion.
Mann was one of our best today - plays with heart and has a lot of ability.
They just need to leave him in one position for a while so he can build confidence and combinations.
I thought Sims was huge and really stepped up when required.
LAM, McDonald (I know he is much maligned but he was very good today), JDB, Vaughn and Thompson were all very good.
We lack a real leader and game manager.
Should have buried them long before the intercept.
Golden point was farcical...

Not a lot of optimism to be gleaned from this game.
Canberra were rubbish and really a shadow of the team that stormed into the finals last year.
They had lost their last 4...until tonight.
We were probably the better team but our game management leaves a lot to be desired.
Penrith won again so now a place in the 8 is under serious threat.
Manly next week - They will be a different proposition to Canberra.
I am not optimistic.

To the posters questioning supporters being negative I say pull your head in. Are we meant to walk away after that game dancing an Irish jig??
Face facts, we lack the smarts/skills to close out tight games. The irony is McCrone had his best game in a while which we have been waiting for yet it made little difference. Heaping blame on the refs is head in the sand stuff and misses the point that we are a soft, mentally weak team.
Time for another committee review.

The football gods were against us tonight.

The effort was there.

We lost Packer very early.

Frizell is busted

Duges is fatigued and needed a break, but super coach plays him.

Head knocks.

An intercept when we seemed certain to score.

The real concern for me is the lack of killer instinct/decisiveness.

We don't have a real game manager. We don't have a real leader, on or off the field.

Hence we don't win the close games.

Team selection remains a mystery to me.

Why is Milne picked in the 17 when we are scheduled to play a team with a massive forward pack.

Be decisive Paul, or please accept a more appropriate position at the club commensurate with your skill set.
