Raiders side for Warriors game

Yeah, I was surprised that Toots was overlooked back then too, I guess management were looking for a long-term captain, not someone who is in the twilight of their career. Of course, Germ's been with us over 10 years now, he won't be with us forever either. McLinden will probably be our next captain in a few seasons.

Still, my vote's for Wiki this week if Woolford doesn't play.

It's hard to pick between the both of them because they are so simular (obviously not in appearance). They both have been around the club for a long time and they both are the 'lead by example' style players you would want as a captain. I think they should stick with Wiki because he has been in the role more than Croker. The other option is looking to the future for a replacement for Woolford maybe Schif or McLinden?

Croker will be captain. On Saturday night when Germ went off Croker was captain. When he got spear tackled and blew up Archer said to him "You're the captain Jason, I need more from you than that"

Back to the side, I am happy with that side. Close to full strength. I personally want Lawrence at hooker. If it is Drew I hope he has a point to prove. One area you can get the warriors is speed in the ruck. We got on top of them in that semi last year with the little men getting out of dummy half. Drew needs to do that if he plays. If he just passes, then he is nothing more than a passenger, and an ugly passenger at that.

Meh, I didn't mind Wiki not getting captain, what's the point of having a captain who isn't even on the field the entire game? I think that's what they were thinking back when they selected Woolford, too.

On WIN TV news tonight:

The coach is quietly confident about Woolford being fit for the weekend. Woolford was getting further tests from the specialist today, but it is believed that the injury is not as bad as first feared.

Drew is on the bench, "on standby" for Woolford. However, Drew himself has still not been given the all clear from the physiotherapist to play.

Carney trained in the key playmaker role for a very good proportion of today's session. However, the coach said that while there is a "chance" Carney will play first grade, there is ALSO a "chance" he will play Premier League.

Plus the news about player signings.... reported on the player market thread.

From today's Rugby Union Times

Drew stunned by his Raiders recall
By Peter Fitzgerald
Wednesday, 21 July 2004

Plucked from obscurity, Canberra Raiders utility Brad Drew is set to return to the top grade this weekend as questions remain about captain Simon Woolford's injured shoulder.

Drew hasn't played first grade since the Raiders defeated the Sharks in June, the same week he announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the year to take up a two-year deal with the Huddersfield Giants in the English Super League.

It was in the Sharks match the stocky 29-year-old first injured his calf.

He had been selected in the Raiders' Premier League outfit to take on the Bulldogs in Gosford the following week but was a late withdrawal as a result of injury.

Drew has only played half a match since - again for the Premier League side against Balmain on July 3, but re-injured his calf that afternoon.

The announcement of Drew's return was even a shock to player himself.

"I didn't even know I was on the bench," Drew said when asked about his selection yesterday. "I still haven't been cleared by the physio yet so I suppose I've got to get through this week of training first and see how the calf pulls up."

A decision on what role Drew will play in Sunday's must-win home match against the Warriors won't be known until the fitness of Woolford is confirmed.

The skipper was unable to train yesterday. Instead, he had an ultrasound on his shoulder, which he injured during Saturday night's 42-8 loss to the Panthers.

Woolford also had X-rays on his shoulder on Monday, results showing he is suffering from bruising to his shoulder.

There was no evidence of major structural damage.

Raiders coach Matt Elliott is hopeful both Woolford and Drew will be able to take their place on the field for Sunday's game.

"We probably got caught out a little bit on the weekend when we did lose Simon and we just didn't have any hooker cover," he said. "Brad certainly gives us a lot of versatility off the bench.

"I'm still optimistic both will be fine."

Drew completed his first full-strength training session in five weeks yesterday but was happy with the way his injured calf handled it.

"It was a good session - a lot of running to test it out a bit," he said. "[The calf] feels okay at this stage but we'll just have to wait and see how it goes for the rest of the week."

With the possibility Woolford may not play, Elliott was not prepared to confirm exactly how his side would line-up on Sunday.

Halfback Mark McLinden is still recovering from the flu, which hampered his performance against Penrith last weekend.

Youngster Todd Carney was also named on a five-man bench as back-up, but Elliott is reluctant to use Carney too much in first grade this season.

"I don't see Todd as hooker cover at this stage of his career," Elliott said. "He's only just 18 and I don't really want to be whacking him in the engine room at this stage. There's other players to come into the scene if Simon is unavailable."

- I'm getting really tired of Elliott's stubbornness.
- If we're winning games, Elliott can pick whatever team he wants. But as it stands, this is a poor team. Compare each Raiders player to the corresponding Warriors player - I don't know if we have one winner.
- Guys like Robertson, Smith and Gafa, even Woolford and Rhino, they're good players. But when you put them up against the players from the top teams, like Wing, Rooney, Fittler, Webcke, etc. it's really no surprise that as a team, we're not up to their standard either. Our guys pale in comparison, and it's not an issue how "good" a player is, it's how good they are in comparison to players from other teams.
- I honestly think that considering our playing roster, we are over-performing this year, not under-performing.

Who would you pick as hooker then, kris_man? Croker? He sure did a good job in hooker against the Panthers

If Woolford is in doubt, then picking Drew is a good idea IMO.

You're deadset kidding yourself.

Schif > Webb.
Mogg > Martin.
Rhino > Paleawhatshisname.
Germ > Anderson (who isn't even a hooker).
Statue > Villa.
Muss > Faumuina.
Toots > Anderson.
Hodgson > Tuimuvavi.

And that's being generous to the Warriors... and I'm not biased either, theres no way that those Warrior players are better than ours.

If we're winning Elliot can pick any team he wants can he Kris Man? Well he must be grateful for that observation, as I'm pretty sure it's up to the head coach to pick their team week in and week out regardless.

Besides, winning 5 out of the last 8 ain't that bad.
