Monaghan named for Raiders

Tuesday, August 18, 2009
The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have named Joel Monaghan in the centres this weekend, for the Green Machine’s trip over the Tasman to take on the New Zealand Warriors on Sunday afternoon.
Monaghan missed the Raiders 24-12 win over the Dragons on Saturday night with some bone bruising to his left knee, but is expected to be fit for the clash at Mt Smart Stadium this weekend.
The Raiders have lost experienced prop Scott Logan for the season with scans revealing a fracture to his cheekbone. Logan’s injury sees Tom Learoyd-Lahrs pushing up into the front row, with Monaghan’s return seeing Joel Thompson shifting from the centres back to the second row.
Raiders Coach David Furner said Monaghan would have to get through training this week to prove himself fit for the contest and said the team would miss the experienced Logan for the remainder of the year.
“Joel has last week off because of his injury and has started training again this week to try and be ready for the Warriors. He’ll need to get through the sessions later in the week to make sure he’s ok but we’re confident he will be,” Furner said. “Losing Scott Logan is a blow as he has got us going forward the past couple of weeks, having said that we’ve pushed Tommy Learoyd-Lahrs up into the front row and we know he can do the job.”

I thought Shillington was due back this week? I pray that Kelly doesn't get called up if Monas is ruled out.

Don't like Tom LL in the front row. Blunts him as a weapon. We need him running wide, not being a battering ram.

TLL wants to play front row , he see's that as his position.

But I see him more damaging out wide, that was an awesome sight , seeing him bring that ball back after the kickoff last weekend , I was sh*tting myself just watching it on TV.

Logan is out for the year , so we may have seen the last of him in green. the club apparently still wants to talk to him but not sure what will develop from that.
Anyway he has had a massive contribution tom our team , the likes of Tilse and co have learnt heaps from the big fella. well done Scotty.

I think Milne will come in if Mona's can't make it... As long as the names Turner, Kelly, and Buttriss don't show up I'm happy...

TLL can run wider if he wants but Thurling and JT can do a similar job in the 2nd row anyway so we don't lose too much.

Hes out for this clash, they say hes only out for a week. Might be best just to rest him for the year, we got nothing to play for.

For mine , its not only an away game but we were so fired up last week and it was such an aggressive game , I believe the boys might be flat this week. In saying that we may be flat but it will probably be enough to beat the Warriors

I really don't see the point in playing monaghan. He's not 100%, the game and rest of the season mean nothing; why risk him?
The same goes for Dugan.

Here the club has a perfect opportunity to give a chance to the fringe players at SL to see what they can offer in the remaining few games.

I would say we are better off trying to build some sort of stability in our team... Over the past five years that's been the issue... We are inconsistant because our team changes, sometimes massively, week to week... Look at the Eels... They had only ONE player different last night against the Tigers than they did the last time they met (in round 3 I think)....

Im a Manly fan , and i have the Raiders at 13 + to beat the Warriors...why the lack of confidence ?

They have watched the rest of the season and we are very very very very very very very up and down... How else do you think we lose to a bottom of the ladder team one week then win the next against a top 8 side 56-0?

That said I'm hoping the last few weeks have been concentrating on consistancy... If we can keep it up maybe the players will finally start to get into some sort of rhythm they can replicate next year...

Waddell possibly starting and shillington back in action.
