Not saying it's a bad facility. Took me nearly an hour to get there. Heard it's usually 20 minutes by train from Britomart to Penrose, but when I was over there the trains were off at the time so had to go by bus.

Not a bad effort from Newcastle.

Only been to three so far, and i'd go Brookie, then AAMI, then Hunter. Went to both Mel v Man games last year. Brookevale was off the charts insane.

Of the grounds I've been to:

SFS (bit dated but with 20k+ in is a decent enough ground)
Etihad (playing in a dome is weird but good for noise and atmosphere)
Nib (when its not raining)
ANZ (only been to club games and 80% empty, felt like some weird movie set)
Shark Park (due to being at night and freezing wind and rain blowing in my face and lack of hot drinks outlets!)

going to Suncorp in a couple of weeks so no doubt it will head the list if all I read is true and looking forward to visiting AAMI in a couple of months. Newcastle looks a great ground, nice mix of old and new and good size for club RL, hope to get up there for a game one day.

Still haven;t been anywhere that beats the old Wembley on Challenge Cup final day though. Allowing them to pull down the twin towers was sacrilege!

Suncorp- accessibility, viewing angles, facilites best all round. Pity its in Qld.
SFS- viewing angles, atmosphere, facilities need renewing.
Newcastle- Accessibility, viewing angles.
ANZ- best facilities, lower bowl along sidelines is excellent for viewing, accessibility.

One thing i like about the big australian stadiums is there is plenty of room in the walkways around the stadium so you dont feel like a sardine. Compare this to Elland Road and Old Trafford where i have been to see internationals and GF and it is like being a sardine, especially the lower tier of the west stand at elland road which is diabolical.

Put 75% of the proposed match of the day games at the SFS and we are doing well. the rest at ANZ and one per year at the SCG in heritage round.

I remember Josh Reynolds saying Mount Smart is his least favourite place to play, because even on the nicest day, it has a dungeon type quality.

Nope.

Gold Coast stadium is a carpet. Far and away the best stadium surface for players.

Anyway, Bankwest is now 100 times in front of any other stadium in this vote.

AAMI is very good, though I can’t make a call on which is best until I experience bankwest. Suncorp and aami have the advantage of being walking distance from city centre which is a plus when you’re a sports tourist.

Bankwest is also walking distance to the Parra city centre (5 mins - at most). And, a massive amount of food and beverage options within that precinct. Currently, the best option for pre-match entertainment for League in the country, bar possibly Suncorp.

Are there decent hotels near stadium?

Is Mt Smart Stadium dimly lit compared to other stadiums?

It’s fine when you’re there. Maybe it’s the angle of the lighting towers or something on TV.

There is a lot of dark space at the northern end though where there isn’t much in the way of stands as the lighting doesn’t really reach the embankment behind that well.

As for the weather I don’t think it makes much difference as a lot of the games there are at night, and the Sunday day games actually seem to be sunny reasonably often.

A lot of the usual big chains have hotels there (Holiday Inn, Parkroyal, Mantra etc) so I don’t think you’d be short on options. You’d get a higher ratio of business travellers to tourists normally too which probably means it’ll be easier to get decent room rates on the weekend.

Thanks, hoping to get along to the nines

I always assumed it was either Saruman or the dread lord Sauron casting a shadow over Mt Smart that made it look so dark.
