on current form

1) Daly Cherry Evans - best halfback in the game
2) Mitchell Pearce - dominated the 2013 season
3) Cooper Cronk - didn't perform as well as DCE and Pearce this year. Still a good player, but has been surpassed by the next generation
4) Kevin Sinfield - great player.
5) Adam Reynolds - Needs improving to reach his potential. has to run more

1. Cooper Cronk
2. DCE
3. Mitchell Pearce

Those three are well clear of the rest, which is a bit of a crapshoot.

Cherry Evans and Cronk are seriously at the moment the only 2 half backs worth mentioning at this point in time.

Reynolds has potential to be up there but remains to be seen if he takes it

then the rest are way behind in my opinion

Reynolds is shit.

The only halfbacks worth mentioning are ones with a running game; an ability to break the line at any moment in attack thus keeping the defence in two minds. This is what the best ever in Joey Johns did so freaking well.

And it's what the top 3 halfbacks do well (nowhere near Johns of course) whereas Reynolds couldn't run through a wet paper bag atm.

It's also why Luke Brooks will be the best in 3-4 years. He's a sensational talent with both a passing and running game.

DCE (#1) and Cronk (#2) are clearly the top 2 at the moment if you count JT as a five-eight (which i do). No one really comes close.

Pearce (#3) and Reynolds (#4) are the next best. If Pearce could play as well in origin as he does for the Roosters then he would come very close to Cronk. Reynolds needs some work with his running game but could become a very good player.

Shaun Johnson has enormous potential but im not sure he will reach it under Matt Elliot
Albert Kelly has a very good year but he is a five-eight wearing a number 7.
Aiden Sezer plays the traditional halfback role for the titans and has good potential aswell.

If he can deliver on his potential (and i think he will), Luke Brooks will be the best halfback in the game within 4 years.

You're an imbecile. Reynolds has been playing to a game plan that doesn't include running. He has players around him to do that. He has a fine running game, but his job has been to kick and set up play. That will most likely change this year.

Myth Pearce is the worst halfback to ever play rep football. He is a choker and a joke at rep level. If it wasn't for cronyism, he would never have got a rep jersey and NSW might have been competitive for the past 6 years.

Reynolds will take Pearce's NSW spot next year and hold it for the next 10 years. He will also get Cronk's spot for the roos within two years.

Yeah great game plan :sarcasm:

Purposely have your halfback not take on the line and be predictable. Hmm, I think not...

Just on Pearce, it's the game plan for him to be poor in Origin. It's not because he isn't capable! It's just, umm, all a part of the game plan.

Reynolds has a decent running game.A passing game with vision is what he is lacking

Yeah, I worded that poorly. Should have said "....a game plan that doesn't rely on his running....." I did say he has a fine running game.

Reynolds' rookie year in 2012 (in which he won rookie of the year ) was straight after major knee surgery, with complications. You saw very little running. That was definitely intentional and part of Maguires plans. It takes at least 6 months to get anywhere near full speed with that type of injury + throw in the confidence factor. He still went great. Last year he did run a lot more running and scored and setup some great running tries, but he struggled with a leg injury during the back end of the season..you could see him grabbing at it after tackles.

I'm willing to bet now that his second year is out of the way, we're going to witness a long-term, superstar halfback emerge.

I'll go the other way, he'll be doing well to finish the year in 1st grade.

Be interesting to watch him in 14, has to play on the left to be effective but if he still struggles to pass into space and under pressure like he did in 13 it will stifle GI immensely..

Right here, right now.

1. Daly Cherry-Evans
2. Cooper Cronk
3. Mitchell Pearce
4. Adam Reynolds
5. Shaun Johnson
6. Tyrone Roberts
7. Albert Kelly
8. Trent Hodkinson
9. Jeff Robson
10. Peter Wallace
11. Robert Lui
12. Sam Williams
13. Chris Sandow
14. Ben Hunt
15. Luke Brooks
16. Mitchell Cornish

That list will almost certainly change come 2014 but it's difficult to really rate the rookies and how they'll perform in the NRL just yet.

Some justifications...

Until the finals, Pearce and Reynolds were neck and neck but the premiership gave Pearce the edge. Both have their strengths and weaknesses and until Reynolds plays Origin it's hard to really gauge just how good he is. Right now, he strikes me as a good club halfback, which is exactly what Pearce is.

Johnson takes the final top five spot on the back of his impressive World Cup form. Final aside, I thought he had a good campaign and he's definitely provided the Warriors with some highlights over the past few years. If he can develop his skills, could easily been in the top 3, but that's a big question.

Kelly was a big mover and shaker in 2013 but couldn't justify him finishing ahead of Roberts who helped his team make the finals and was one of the best on ground in that huge upset against the Storm. On form, Kelly may have the edge, but Roberts has the better background and looks the more secure option...for now.

Hodkinson rounds out my 8, thought he made a positive difference to the Dogs who had a difficult year and all-round he's very solid. Robson came close given his combination with Carney but fell just short.

Wallace dropped a few spots on the back of being relegated to the bench and given the tap on the shoulder. I can see him finding a spot in the 8 if he finds his feet at Penrith but the dour end to his stint at Brisbane hurt him here.

Then we get into the lower end of the spectrum - Lui > Williams on the basis that Lui actually saw some first grade in 2013 and while he wasn't always good he had his moments. Both have had stints in the finals in the past.

Two consecutive wooden spoons has seen Sandow plummet to the lowest ranked position for experienced halfbacks. Still, he's had his odd good day (usually against the Broncos) so I don't think he's into the negative category just yet.

Then we're onto the rookies and it's basically down to who has the most runs on the board. I thought Hunt was very mixed in the back end of 2013, showed some good vision but let himself down on certain basics (eg. long distance kicking).

Brooks had an impressive debut but you can't gauge a lot out of that just yet.

Cornish hasn't even played first grade. If we went for the more experienced alternative (aka McCrone) I'd say he'd finish behind Williams given his best performances were at five eigth but hardly high praise.
