I don't think you can stop raids. All you can do is pay the market rate for the talent you want to keep and provide a healthy environment for them to thrive in so they don't want to leave.Excellent post and I stand for every word, I am sure most on here do as well!
Question is how do you stop being raided? How do you identify the ones you really want of it means you have to pay more?
Talent identification is difficult and as I said before, more art than science. I member Gus saying Hethrington's physical capabilities were off the charts elite, but he couldn't turn that into outcomes that made him an elite player. To'o on the other hand, maximises his physical capability in full and combines it with hardwork and commitment to be an elite player. if you saw him when he was 16 you thought, "he's too small".
What you can do is monitor progress continuously, focus on teaching them the values of teamwork and communication. Be consistent so juniors understand a poor attitude is not acceptable.
You will weed out the poor attitudes and the rest is in the lap of the gods. Physical development is unpredictable. Will Jack Cole grow to be 190cm and fill out like Leota? Will he be incredibly strong like To'o? Or is this it, his physical limits are reached?
Place your bets gentleman, will he be the new Luaii or the new Harry Sjeikka?
It is so hard to know, although I think Jack will have a good career whether he morphs into Leota/To'o or not. I am just pointing out how hard it is to pick winners and you are going to get it wrong sometimes.
