Never have I once talked up rankin. But yeah thanks to ja we’ve assembled the squad we have.
I’m not suggesting you talked up Rankin.

I’m making the point that focusing on JA and thinking he’s the reason our squad is poor doesn’t make sense.

Let’s assume he wasn’t in the squad and someone else was we still would have struggled more than the roosters did with 3 players of that quality out.

We have assembled a solid 1-17 but our depth beyond that still isn’t at the level of other teams.

You’re making the point to argue. He’s below nrl standard and shouldn’t be top 30.

here’s hoping he asks for an extension and gets shown the door, Nrown style.

OK mate. The conversation was originally about how well the Roosters covered for the loss of three key players but you’ve made it about JA again.

I actually agree that he isn’t up to First Grade. We could replace him with a baby giraffe and it would make more LBA’s!

What do you say about the Dogs new coach? And their old coach? Did the coach make a difference or where they building to this?
The new coach hasn’t been there long enough to have much influence over them. Like Mal Meninga coaching Origin. The Dogs have just been lucky enough to come up against us who took them lightly and the Tigers who are gash. “Building” to a performance is bullshit. Did we ‘build’ up to the Roosters performance? Form is something that can change dramatically in the space of a week, and I doubt Potter would get better results over 24 games than Barrett did.

I think he will but that’s because Barrett is legitimately a terrible coach.
I think BA would also get better results with the Dogs than Barrett did.

I think Barrett is probably a better coach than Potter. Barrett’s poor results would have been affected by him being blamed for the club’s other problems and consequently undermined by the playing group. Potter doesn’t have to deal with that.

I think he’s a better coach than he’s shown, but he’s still a terrible coach. I think he could be more suited to a top line assistant or maybe a rep coach, but he isn’t suited to a fulltime head coach in NRL

Barrett is a terrible head coach. Results at two clubs prove it.
Not really. Ricky Stuart had poor results at two weak clubs and great to good results at stronger clubs. The difference is the resources available.

Not to say Barrett is a good coach, but most coaches would have gotten similar results at the Dogs, and Hasler hasn’t been able to change Manly’s pattern of following a good season with a poor one, which has been occurring since the back-to-back shit seasons of 2015-16 (2016 being Barrett’s first year at the club). I would say Barrett is no worse than most coaches, but then most coaches are unemployed or tenuously holding onto their careers.

I'm pretty sure the results at both Manly and the Dogs were better both immediately before and after Barrett.
They were, but that could just be coincidence. In fact it’s likely that coaches inherit results in their first year or two. They definitely inherit most of a roster in that first year and even partial roster in successive years. For example, if Arthur got there arse now, the incoming coach would already have 12 players contracted for 2024, and five for 2025, totalling $3M or more. He would have had zero input into those contract decisions.

But even a coach who has been at a club since before every current contract was negotiated is still constrained by the resources available at that club. He still has to contend with club politics involving players that are both better paid and more influential with owners, executives and fans.

Yeah but what we've got here is an immediate improvement or worsening at the point of the change in coach, without much change in roster. It's a pretty good correlation in this case.

Then you’ve missed the tries and line breaks he’s created, the solid defence, the high involvement that has taken pressure off his team mates. He’s doing better than every other half in reserve grade. He is the perfect backup.
These line breaks, solid defence and high involvement must be from the games i haven't watched him in.
