How does that work?

I admit I dont understand defense as it bores me senseless.
It reflects defensive effort to get numbers into the tackle and (legally) slow the ruck. As an example, here's Paulo vs Ofahengaue right now (about the 72nd minute). One has chased the collision better than the other:

MerkinTacklesMinutesTackles per minute
Ofahengaue26360.72
Paulo16450.36

The fewer tackles per minute by a middle defender, the more space he is leaving for attackers to isolate other defenders, and make line breaks or get quick play-the-balls.

Nice avoidance... how about you go back to the question and use the same stat to prove your claim Reed is not a worse defender this year than last year?

We we're obviously dreadful.

The final scoreline probably flattered us I feel. We were dead set woeful and deserved to have 50 put on us, although a lot of tries were scored whilst Paulo and Hopgood were off the field too.

To be honest, not only did we appear to expect it, we got what we deserved with that level of commitment as a result.

We also probably needed that result. Hopefully we learnt a few things from all of this.

Lane will be better for the run. Simonsson went OK at times.

Let's just hope Gutho doesn't get a HIA, sin-binned or injured. It's hard to fathom just how much of an absolute rabble we become without him.
