Rebuilding for Future

The only clean out required is the coaching staff.

2 maybe 3 outside backs and a replacement for JDB is what we need for sure. Other than that, we have the makings of a very good roster. 4 of our guys have been picked for Origin next Sunday. That's in line with most of the top sides.

More importantly, we need a coaching staff that can bring our young guys through effectively so guys like Saab, Ford, Sailor Lovodua etc won't go the same way as Garrick, Herbert and Sele and go nowhere with us, and make it elsewhere.

Premierships are no longer won on the field, they are won and run in the board room. Look at the roosters and nick politis. We need a board overhaul, get some savvy businessmen and we can grow an empire.

I fear our "rebuild" will be long time coming.

Believe it or not I dont point any fingers at the playing group.

Buying this player and that player is also not going to solve the problem.

Our problem is St George Illawarra. The Club.

No rebuild will be possible until we clean out the "old boys". Unfortunately, the dynasty has begun. Wave after wave of so called "bleeding Red and White" will continue to permeate our once great club.

The only possible scenario where we, the suffering loyal fans, could begin to see change is through memberships. It's unfortunate we have lemmings who renew without consideration of what that really means. Increasing memberships is a direct endorsement of what the Club, STGI, the Board and the coaching staff are doing. I hope they are happy with the mediocracy, their seats in the stand and their cap or scarf each year. I've heardxsone say "*^#@ it, i'll renew just in case we have a good year". Classic derpness.

The problem is how do we could encourage members NOT to renew given what was said above?

Whatever the answer, this is our only chance for any change and rebuild. Everything else is just dreaming!

I'd just like to remind members that in 2010 we had a crappy board and one of the worst CEO's in our history but despite all this, we had Bennett and a good coaching staff and good recruitment staff. We wond the competition.

Yes we need a cleanout and by bringing in new management we should correct our problems at board and management level. However, we do have some poor outside backs, fringe first graders and poor attitude.

I say bring is Gould or someone like him to cleanout the joint because those in charge are in self protection mode and so won't make changes.

Unfortunately we are stuck with the players we have no decent player will come anywhere near the Dragons with McGregor as coach unless we pay massive overs for them.Sorry but we are in deep white with no way out as the board is useless and living in the past.

Any good build starts with a strong & proper foundation base. We don't have that in any way and until management & coaching staff are flushed out....then any type of rebuild is flawed.
WIN have been disappointing, our new CEO has been underwhelming and our Head Coach is beyond our major weakness. Just a few structural cracks that need to be filled before the club can rise again!

Well I gave Mary and Millward the benefit of the doubt when it came to retention.

Guys like Garrick and Herbert were unknown quantities when they were with us (because Mary never played them), but until we saw them play elsewhere, we never really knew what they could do.

It's not like they are world beaters by any means at this stage, but there is enough there to suggest they should have been persisted with and developed better.

And given the weaknesses of our 1-5, they would have been pretty handy right about now.

Disagree to an extent - while Garrick seemed a plodder in the lower grades, anyone who’d watched Herbert coming through would have seen that we’d lose out by letting him go. He’s dominated every grade he played in. Should have debuted with us.

But I’m just glad that you’re seeing that the problem is the coach, not individual players.

The funds granted by the NRL towards our salary cap are enough to buy whoever we need for a competitive top 30. The problem is to buy the right player not just any player.

Fixing our management structure is another matter altogether. Their is substantial resistance to change from within management and given that their is precious little apatite of change and absolutely no accountability, we need some adverse media pressure to get the ball rolling. We can only hope that someone in the media will see exposing the problems of SGI as a winning story.

If we are talking about a rebuild from a team perspective, then we must remove the roadblock that is McGregor.
Some say our retention is terrible and no doubt there have been those that have gone on to play 1st grade and play very well.

Yesterday we saw a orime example of why players leave us for greener pastures. McGregor, in his wisdom selects a player who hasnt played 1st grade for nearly 4yrs based on the premise of "experience" and doing well in CC. Selecting Lats (the week before) and trumpeting his return from injury. Playing Aitken, who is so out of form. Having Lomax play bench, centre, wing, fullback and middle forward. He then ridicules the "young" players for not performing.

Our CC team yesterday had:
5 DS players - Saab, Lovodua, Masters, H. Lomax and Ford.
2 JF players - SSE and Shalom O'Ofou

Where do these guys fit into our 1st grade when McGregor selects his neanderthals.
I see Lats had 6 runs for a massive 44m and Allgood 6 runs for 50m whilst our up-and-coming forwards Timm 23 runs for 202m and Kerr 13 runs for 141m. No doubt Lats and Allgood will be first in line to return to 1st grade due to their "experience".

Is it any wonder why we lose our promising players.

Reshuffle put JP back on the wing as I asked why the is he even out?
Who do you take out? Saab is the future, according to folk on here, so is it Pearson?

Does:

1. Dufty
2. Pereira
3. Marsters
4. Silverman
5. Saab

Look right?

100% correct there DS. Mary cant or wont take the risk believing the young lion forwards are not ready for 1st grade where the experienced ones...just keep on ploddin along but are low risk...but low impact.
I did not watch or hear the game or read an article yet. Just saw the 5 min highlights and Mary's presser. But let me guess the squad we had would of struggled in the middle for yards or to hold em in the middle.?
I note McInnes went off early which would of been a blow. So How did the great Robson go when given a chance.?
