Redcliffe Dolphins recruitment targets

Lets say you are right though, what makes you think he'd care about the dolphins any more? At least he is staying at Newcastle cause he has mates there and has shown he wants to win for them. What exactly is there at the Dolphins for him other than cash?

When his contract is up in 5 years time and he's looking for a new juicy deal, he will be hoping like hell that he's still on the good side of Newcastle.

Say what you want about the media not having integrity but there is no doubt the way Andre dealt with O'Sullivan was nothing shy of pathetic, other clubs will have seen it too. Wayne made the effort to meet him in person and all of that and the Ponga camp couldn't even give the common courtesy and notify them of their intentions, disgusting.

I think Ponga has been shown up since Pearce left the club. He's a talented player with great evasive skills, but he needs a proper halfback and dummy half to give him something to work with.

Knights won't be able to pay overs for a halfback or dummy half now that they've got Ponga tied up for five years on a $6 million contract. He'll have to do it alone. Randall, Clunes and Clifford aren't strong enough to get him there and the coach is an untested ex-assistant from the Storm. Plenty of assistants from Melbourne have failed as head coaches.

simple fact he is not worth close to $1mill. Clubs that spend $1mill on forwards are stupid. clubs that give a forward a 10 year contract at $1mill are doubly stupid!
He ran for 250 metres last week and made five tackle busts. Today he ran well and provided a couple of deadly offloads. He's clearly the best forward in the game on his day.

He will need to re-invent himself into a player like Benji, where he was able to become a game manager once his agility left him behind, as it always does when players get older. However, Newcastle will need him to be more like Lockyer, rather than Benji.

If he can't do that, he won't be worth half of what he's getting paid. Probably why he was pushing for a 5 year deal, he knows he can't run around players forever, about 2-3 years and he won't be as elusive.

I cannot see him organising a team after the poor way he handled his playing future. He was like a kid deferring to his father and let him do all the talking. Not a good sign for Newcastle fans.

None of which negates he isn’t a $1million a year player! He doesn’t win you games, that’s what halves and fb’s do. Hence why cowboys have been lower table since they decided to make him there marquee man.

You say that but reality is if Newcastle don’t sign him then a) someone else does for $1millon, Ie exactly what dolphins were going to do and b) Newcastle aren’t going out and attracting a different million $ marquee player anytime soon.

It's more complicated than that. Green stuck with an outdated game plan and our best juniors were raided by Storm and Knights. Jerome Hughes, Brandon Smith, Jake Clifford and Kalyn Ponga.

Michael Morgan spent much of the time on the sideline before being forces into an early retirement. Holmes has been injured a fair bit over the last two seasons.

Newcastle are now stuck with Ponga after poaching him from the Cowboys. They had to pay $1.2 million a year to keep him because there's no one else. He alone is not going to bring a premiership to Newcastle.

It all worked out well for Dolphins and Cowboys. Dearden is progressing nicely and becoming a great ball running 5/8. Drinkwater is killing it at fullback. HTF is only going to get better Daejarn Asi is a promising young talent. Dolphins can focus on Walsh and Munster.

Dolphins should follow Storm's blueprint and focus on recruiting the best juniors.

Are Cowboys fans the most deluded in the comp?

Wowee
It’s like they don’t look at the table at the end of the year lol

its a good outcome for dolphins IF they get Munster and ideally Walsh. If they get neither and they don’t get Ponga then who are they signing as their two marquee players?

How did the Knights go yesterday?

So desperate for a halfback they're bringing in Milford.

Say what tou like, but Dearden has improved out of sight, amassing 6 try assists, 5 line break assists, 3 tries, 3 offloads and 3 drop outs over the first 7 games. Clifford has 2 tries, 0 try assists, 2 line break assists, 1 drop out and 2 offloads.

They're going terribly, do doubt

How many false dawns have the Cowboys had since Ponga left? Where have they finished on the ladder?

You'd think you'd learn your lesson by now not to count your chickens but alas here you are

We might go back to our old ways and finish bottom four. I'm enjoying our run while it lasts. We're still a work in progress and will lapse back to old habits every now and then, but I think we've finally got a decent backline and hungry young forwards who have some talent.

It is a big worry. I hope that they get someone because we can’t afford the Dolphins to be cannon fodder, particularly when we are seeing a more competitive season.

It also wouldn’t help any calls for future expansion if they aren’t at least somewhat competitive from day dot

The 18th team won't be introduced until Dolphins have secured a strong and stable fanbase.

The bye will favour some clubs, depending on when they get it.

Sure, from the perspective of that team and their coach etc but there may be a lot of supporters who just watch their team go around every week.

You are definitely leaving money on the table and potentially viewership.

If dolphins end up whipping boys it’s going to hurt badly hopes for an 18th team soon. There’s a lot riding on their first three years performances! If they are competitive, and even better make the playoffs every year it will put to bed the player depth argument and the nrl can move forward with club 18 introduction in around 2027.

fanbase won’t make an iota of difference to an 18th club decision as long as we arent talking about a third brisbane team for the 18th spot.
