Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

It was a knock on, Rob. As clear as the nose on your face.

Clear??? So that's why they needed 14 looks at it to determine it to be a knock-on? You must have a decent size nose, I thought it was knocked out of Bromwich's hands by Reynolds and others I've spoken to think the same so obviously it wasn't clear but it was dead set mood killer of a decision.

If it takes that many looks that's when the process is becoming a gee-up, the advantage should go to the attacking side and the ref was obviously happy with it, he gave it a try. I know it's not the black and white thing to do but the video ref should have a feel for the game, if it's a 50/50 call, make the decision that will benefit the game, I was gutted, it was such a let down and I was a neutral, I didn't want to watch after that.

I only saw a replay, and it was a knock on.

Why did they look 14 times? Just like when they look at things 14 times when it is clear on the first replay - because they are incompetent, self doubting tossers.

Don't be blinded by Gus Gould. His rant was one of the most outrageously wrong pieces of commentary of all time. Hit Bromwichs hand and hits the Canterbury player who is in front of him. Knock on. End of the section. Right decision and right process. The refs are there to adjudicate not give scores out of 10 for entertainment which is what Gould wanted.

I said in the game thread that I was not happy with the officiating in the Roosters v Penrith game. Looks like I was not alone. Out of the 2 referees, 2 touch judges and 2 video referees appointed to that game, only 1 of them, Touch Judge Jason Walsh is officiating in this week's NRL semi-finals.

It was shown on the Back Page last night and I rewound it a few times and still couldn't see a clear knock-on but my point is the process of the video ref is totally flawed and ruining the game. In any particular match we could find maybe dozens of small knock-ons or infringements if we looked at instances close up on replay but in this case the sense of occasion was lost because of a technicality that really had no bearing on the scoring of the try or wasn't clear in real time. Yes use the video refs for put-downs or for the Captain's challenge but how many times are the crowds celebrations are deflated when every time a try is scored a decision goes upstairs.

If the video ref wasn't used for the Melbourne try and instead a captains challenge was used and ended up with the same result, would there still be talk of ruining the game?

They be saying why have the captains challenge when they can't get it right anyway?

....even though in this instance, they did get it right.
