Refs are crap 3 sin ins in 3weeks..hunt wasn't off side..we penalised then you see opposition do exact same things and nothing ..very frustrating to watch and they wonder where have all crowds gone..nrl is getting harder and harder to watch..didn't we just hire former ref Luke Phillips as well..what a waste of money there

We have been on the wrong side of the refs for the last few weeks. Seriously, what are we doing that other teams aren't? For some reason, we are getting penalised out of the game for the first 20 or 30 minutes. Based on tonight's results, hopefully we've built up a bit of resistance to the penalty avalanche.

Completely bewildered by this barrage of tackle penalties against the Dragons early in the game. No way were Dragons too long on tackled player that warranted 5 consecutive penalties. As I posted after the Parra match, if this was the case take a stopwatch to the Storm they'd be up for 80 penalties a match.

Clearly an agenda at work. Media and NRL hype is now for Roosters vs. Rabbits GF. Strings being pulled to influence on-field outcomes, so Dragons end up in knock-out position for early exit in Finals. Plan probably would have worked had Tigers not bombed about 4 chances on the back of these batch of penalties.

The refs are not consistent in all calls, each ref has a different interpretation of rules. The top teams or certain teams get away with things other teams will be penalised for. Penalisethe wrestling and the other things will fix themselves, and will speed up the game without reducing the interchange numbers. One of the worst is the defenders who run back into defensive line getting in the road of attacking players and not been penalised. We need a new referees boss, some one with a league back ground, who understands rugby league, not these x referees.
We need only on Ref on the field, that is the problem, different opinions between both, ego perhaps also.

I think the refs should call out held, as they do today and then count 1000, 2000 3000. Then and only then should they be able to award a penalty.

In the Mann case last night, there is no way he was on for any length of time. Some of the refs are way too trigger happy against us.

You then watch Melbourne an d the wrestling and delays can be 5 seconds plus, and no penalties.

We are watching the NRL falling apart and Greenberg and the Commission ( costing a fortune) are oblivious! We need a revolution! Green and the Commission need to go and we need a good Footy brain running the game.

Agreed SoS, if Hunt was off side it was very marginal and hardly worthy of a sin binning regardless of any earlier warnings. The Sin Bin is meant to be for intentional / professional fouls.
Dragons were denied a try by 3 Tigers who were ruled off-side near the goal line and it was just a penalty.

Dufty's Sin Binning was also the result of minor contact and not worthy of anything more than a penalty.
Same for McInness, a slightly delayed tackle release in mid-field is not a sin bin....the warnings are usually given for repeated blatant penalties in the red zone.

Refs should have more common sense in blowing penalties.
For example, a penalty on the 5th tackle for a marginally long tackle is absurd as it is too huge a punishment. Some fair minded discretion and unbiased judgement should be used in deciding if a line kick and a new set of six is warranted.

What makes it even funnier is the fact since we’ve hired that former ref as a coach we’ve been getting destroyed by the refs.

No need to look at the Melbourne game for examples (while there would be many)....plenty within our game where slow releases were tolerated.
I have been saying for years that they should design a hand held buzzer for use by the refs with a 3 second delay. The ref presses this when he calls "held" and when he feels it go off, he needs to see the tackled player released or a penalty is awarded.

I also hate hearing the "held" call and seeing the player continue to be wrestled.
While I'm at it, I think the refs should not wait for so long before calling held...it encourages wrestling and is a factor in injuries as the players are twisted and cleaned up by additional tacklers.

On this topic, it also makes me wonder what happened to the days when a ref would call a player offside before they made a tackle? That would've saved Benny IF he was offside last night and would make everyone know the refs are paying attention.

What really pi#ses me off is when a tackler lays all over the attacker looking at the refs waiting to be told to get off. FFS just get up or roll away when the tackle is complete. It worked fine for a 100 years before the wrestling came into the game.

Worked well with the 5 metre rule. Having no marker isn't going to win you any games.

What I find ironic is that our club is bending over backwards to minimise penalties yet we’re copping the most penalties sin bins, whereas other clubs play for them in order to slow the game and they get away with it. Just goes to show there is no consistency to the refereeing.

One mistake that I think we’re making is that we are going in with 1 or 2 players in each tackle and grassing the ball carrier quickly. A lot of opposition teams get 3 or 4 in each tackle and hold up the ball carrier. While our approach allows for more players in the defensive line it can also allow a quicker play the ball which can also catch out the markers. Now don’t get me wrong, Debellin’s tackling technique is brilliant, the best in the game. Sims is also very dominant. However the way the ruck is being refereed there is no reward for one on one dominant tackles.

This is where we should be seeking clarity from the referee’s boss and we should be adapting accordingly. However, There is every chance that they will do a 180 at any moment and without notice.

Agreed.
Ever watch the old games....surprising how quick the play the balls and scrums were.
Players would just get on with it.
Shows the blight on the game the Storm have created with the wrestle and their other tactics.

This is exactly it. We aren't controlling the ruck the same way the other teams are. Like I said in another post, the amount of times we have players laying on the ground when a play the ball happens, the amount of times our markers are still getting square when a play the ball happens. The amount of times we don't have markers etc. We just don't slow it down like the others do and it's leading to the opposition having quicker play the balls. We have to do work on this aspect of our game.

Can someone clarify for me
Why was Ben Hunt sent to the sin bin?
Was it for doing silly looking star jumps??

The ref called him offside.

It was clearly there in the audio and the ref’s hand signals..

For some reason the refs have been targeting the Dragons for some weeks now. I'm not sure what our ref friendly coach is doing about this, but it is not working.

Hunt was caught off-side and because this was after a number of penalties, he sent Hunt to the sin bin. There should have been a warning.

It was a godsend.

10 mins to re-focus and get his head right.
