Reg Gasnier

In today's Sunday Telegraph Reg Gasnier is offering his opinion that in regards to Andrew Johns, that he is an "absolute fool" who should never be named an immortal.

"To be tied up in drugs is just shameful".

Fair enough to vocalise your opinion Reg, however, I do not recall you ever publicly offering your views on your nephews behaviour during the particular State of Origin series, where he was sexually harassing women via text, amongst performing other alleged drunken yobbo acts.

The spotlight was on Mark then, and based upon your current views, for consistency's sake you should have been laying the boot into him also.

True, yet Mark Gasnier of 3 years ago and Andrew Johns today are two completely different fish.

Maybe if Mark were hailed as the Messiah of Rugby League and the next Immortal, old Reg may have said something. I don't know, and neither does anyone.. because Mark was in his early 20's and on his first Origin, not being considered for immortaldom.
He's since cleaned up his act and been involved in no further indiscretions.

Johns is the biggest name in league in decades.

Mark Gasnier was massive news at the time. I, like a lot of people I am sure, am happy he was able to move on and be given a second chance, and he seems the better player and man for it ,because of it all.

And again Johns is convicted and treated harsher than anyone else because of this profile.

Here is a guy who is obviously struggling with many demons, and he has some old soc (silly old Karmichael Hunt) crapping on about him when his own family history should dictate that he keeps his mouth shut.

I just hope like Mark Gasnier, that Andrew Johns is allowed to move on.

I recall at the time that Reg Gasnier said it was something for Mark and the club to sort out.

As it turned out, Mark Gasnier was dropped from the NSW team and fined $50,000 by his club. This in addition to issuing a public apology to all concerned as well as fans.

A very different situation - punishment was being handed out by the bucket load. Mark Gasnier paid the price for his one night of indiscretion.

Either way, I can't see how why Reg Gasnier should keep his opinion to himself when the media calls him up for a comment about Johns and the reported 12 years of drug use.

Without reading the article I'd say Reg Gasnier's comments are more to do with him talking as an Immortal, and the suggestion that Johns may be a future Immortal.

I understand that John Raper took a different tack earlier in the week and said Johns' drug use should not stop him becoming an Immortal. So as Immortals, they are both entitled to their views.

Saints went to town on Mark Gasnier after the Origin incident, some say too harshly.

But at the end of the day, Gaz didn't abuse illegal drugs like "the next Immortal" did.

Is Gasnier also going to put the boot into some of the other immortals....who have done some silly things on the drink for years.....and have the red noses to prove their committment to the cause.

More than 12 years I'd say.

At the end of the day grog isn't illegal. That's about the only difference...

Given the timing of this incident with Mark Gasnier, and Gordon Tallis' revelation of the Kangaroo Tour and the rampant drug use on it, - if you had to place Mark Gasnier as getting caught up in the partying throng or joining Tallis' "crusade group", where do you think he would best fit?

I'm not saying "Gaz" has abused or used drugs, but if it is as rampant in the League player culture that everyone says it is, his behaviour on that particular night would have done him no favours in distancing himself from those likely to have indulged.

I think the noblest and smartest thing for Reg Gasnier to do would have been to keep his senile old mouth shut.

And if all you've got is baseless speculation maybe you should heed your own advice!!

honestly, ex Rugby League legends in their 50's and 60's would have no idea at the social preasures associated with people suffering from mental illness's in todays society. maybe they shouldn't be asked their opinions based on the lack of knowledge they have.

If my opinion counted in the greater public arena, I probably would have had the common sense to do so.

Not like the stupid old Pelican you seem to blindly idolise.

... or the attitude held by a lot of people towards recreational drugs in comparison to their beloved booze. It's like listening to your grandparents - sometimes they are really wise, until they start talking about the Japs...

because back in their day 35 schooners in 3 hours after a 1 hour training session was definitely the norm.

lol. Would that be your 'opinion'? That'd be a Clayton's insinuation if I ever saw one.

You're chasing shadows.

i don't know a great deal about depression or mental illness outside of reading chemicalstorm & princess effie & bllg's posts.

however if someone has been diagnosed with a mental / depression type disorder & yet they continue to either drink or ignore their medication and advice, then the disaster that befalls them is of their own doing.

gasnier is entitled to point this out. it's common sense to me.

They had Tommy Redonikis in the Sunday Tele saying pretty much the same thing. Fancy a bloke renowned for his binges and who's had to give up the drink because of it criticising Johns, what a hypocrite.
