I'll be cheering for Manly tomorrow, but next week the gloves are off. If we don't put at least forty on, I'll consider it a poor showing. Nothing against Manly, I just want to even the ledger. ;)

Now we hear Matt Orford may be out for up to 12 months.

There is not a team in the universe that would deserve something like that to happen more than Manly. It would be karma for cheating the salary cap :)

Alex - that has been bought up before on many forums. I put it to you like this though mate. List Manly's team, then list The Broncos, The Eels, The Roosters, The Dogs along side of it. I think you'll find if being realistic, Manly are WELL within its cap.

If your interested here's some facts for you.

In 2003, Manly had under speant $800,000 from it's salary cap, because it was a known fact we didn't have the cash at the time. At the end of 2003, we signed Ben Kennedy, for $200k per year, and Brent Kite for reportedly $300k per year.

We then picked up a major boost with the injection of cash from our new sponsor Max Delmege.

What we then did, is utilised the $800k as sign on fees (something that was legal at the time, and something that due to this case, the NRL said it would have to review).

Between the two players they combined would have earned $1,500,000 over three years between them. Now, take off $800,000, and that would leave $700,000 over three years. That's around $115k each per year AFTER sign on fees.

Then consider Watmough & Brett Stewart contract were up, and as we weren't travelling well, and they were apprentices, they reportedly re-signed for 3 years at around $70,000 per year each.

Then consider that we have Beaver. He has been with us so long, that we have a HUGE compensation from the NRL in our cap for years of service, so even if he WAS getting paid $200k per year, the figures would show that he is getting much, much less.

That brings us to THIS year.

We have possibly released Sam Harris, Chad Randall, John Hopoate, Terry Hill, Scott Donald, Paul Stephenson & Steve Matai.

You would find quite easily that the above players contracts would cover Bell / Orford quite easily.

Then consider that we have grown our sponsorship base for next year, meaning we get $200,000 compensation again in the salary cap. Not only that, but the NRL is thinking of increasing the cap by the inflation price being 4-5% per year.

In saying that, I would expect that we would have PLENTY of room in the cap, and would consider us to still be in the market for MORE players:-

George Rose
Michael Robertson

etc.

I hope this helps you guys see that we aren't cheating at all.

Some points:

* I find it hard to believe that Kennedy signed for $200K a year - we would have signed him for that.

* Your "huge compensation" for Beaver's contract is only $100K a year maximum for all long serving players - not as much as you think;

* Manly upgraded Monaghan's contract which would have taken up the minimal contracts of Harris, Randall, et al.

I'm confused about the sign-on fees...they aren't included in the salary cap? I think Manly needs to clarify a few things - including whether beachfront units are included in the cap ;-)

Also, could you explain to me how you are going to sign Jamie Lyon for 2007 (who has to be a $300-350K a year player) as well?

Alex. sign on fees are included in the salary cap. We utilised $800k of it in 2003 on Kite & Kennedy.

The papers in this area indicated that Kennedy is on $200k per season.

I am friends with Max's son Robbie, and can tell you that nothing untoward is happenning with units etc. Everyone HAS to understand Orford is a very quiet personal person. He would NEVER go to training and brag about his contract. Do you go to work and tell people your slary? It just doesn't seem right.

I think I can answer your question about Jamie Lyon. Most of the contract 2 years ago for us was reportadle front loaded. What this means, is that due to our roster being so poor back then, we would sign a player up, like Harris, and say "we'll give $450k over three years. In the 1st year we pay him say $250k, year 2 $150k, year 3 $50k. It's general accounting practices.

I think we all know Lyon will be at Manly in 2007 (I can only hope!!), as he has strong ties to the club. You also have to remember a few players (high profile) are retiring at that time as well (Bell, Kennedy, Beaver & co.) - we'll be fine in the purchasing stakes.

I actually hope Lyon get Fielden to play for us!!

Well guys - Manly beat the Broncos by ONE. That makes me a tad happier. Thanks for your support, and I hope you all go well for the rest of the season (except for next week hehe). I wonder which Manly team will turn up. Jeckyll --- or Hyde.

Manly fans are revving this Leuleuai & Perry thing. Apparently Leuleuai asked him to meet him in the car park to dook it out last time, but Perry denied his request.

Should be a fun game, if we can remain competative...but then again Buderus & Johns can calve ANYONE up, just like Lockyer & Seymour.

This years salary cap appears fine - I'm talking about next year. You might have been able to hide Kennedy and Kite's 2005 pay in 2004, but you couldn't hide 2006's in there as well - hope you have good accountants :)

Hang on Alex - What do they say about people in glass houses?

I rememebr about 4 weeks ago Crowey saying they had no money left in the cap for Craig Smith. Yet since then they have signed Smith and about another 3 or 4 $40,000 players and they havent shed the 10 players they claimed they were going to shed in the Knights biggest player clean out. I am pretty sure that Steve Crowe isnt much of an accountant. So lets just sweep any salary cap talk under the carpet like it always has been when talking Knights.
