Replacing Packer...

In light of Millward's recruitment update today it seems we are looking to retain Mann and not replace Dugan.

It seems we are though "very active in the market" for a forward to replace Packer.

After a quick review of the off contract NRL prop forwards for 2018, these are the ones (in my order of preference) I feel are worth consideration...

Are we trying to replace Packer or are we trying to buy a forward as we are short 1 in the roster.
Not many of these are starting props and that is what we need if we are truthful about replacing Packer.
The last thing we need is another bench forward.

Agreed.

They could move Sims to prop and chase a back rower I guess.

I really like that Harawira-Naera from the Panthers but I think he is locked up.

Sims for mine is panning out the way I thought he would which is a bit above average.
He is an edge player who has some go forward at times but far too infrequent for me to think he is a real impact player.
The club has moved him more to the centre defensive role this year and that certainly does not suit him.
He is an adequate player and well short of the hype that surrounds him IMO.
I would also let him go and then go hard for a test quality prop (do what you have to do to get him) and elevate Host / Kerr to the bench for next year.
Host is great young player with plenty of upside the trouble is we know nothing about Kerr other than he came with huge wraps and has done some good things in the lower grade. Hopefully by year end we may know more about him.
Packer's absence is really going to be felt next year unless we are proactive in the market and IMO it's time to get serious, cut out the higher priced fringe players and go for real quality.

I cringe when I hear Dillward say we are in "Deep" discussions with Kurt Mann. He said the same thing about Dugan & Packer and they left out the door. I think his and Mary's definition of "Deep" differs from us fans......Who can ever forget Mary's reference that we went Deep into the Semifinals in 2015! Fans translation......we were gone the first week.

I have a feeling this will be a case of keep the supporters happy by saying we are looking, but in actual fact we have no intentions to sign a replacement. We'll make it up as we go with the hope that one of the lower graded props steps up or maybe at some point next season one falls into our lap from another club due to their(the other club) salary cap problems.

Brenton Lawrence is a bargain basement option.

We will struggle to sign a like for like for Packer. Probably need to sign 3 lessor props to get any sort of equivalent.

Aka standard Millward rhetoric. "We're in deep negations..." "we've made what we feel is a very good offer..." etc....

I would read it as " we believe we have made a very fair offer and won't be f**ked around by his slimy manager " " We have an obligation to make sure our cap is not compromised."

So you rather not get these updates at all ? Then many on here would whinge that they are being kept in the dark.

Maybe when we hear the word, 'deep' ............. most people immediately think of the word, 'sh!t'.

If the Dragons paid Packer what the Tigers did I would be far from impressed they paid overs.
