Retired Hurt

What are the rules on retiring hurt from an innings?

I've always thought that if you are forced to retire from an innings through injury, that you could come back towards the end of the innings if your team was still batting of course.

But having watched the Magic of Madras doco the other day, where Dean Jones was well f*cked up and should've retired hurt, it seemed that if you were forced off the field due to an injury - that was it.

So what is the actual rule?

Thought as much, cheers.

Makes me wonder why AB didn't let Deano go off to get treated for his extreme dehydration though.

you cant retire hurt just because you need a rest

Deano was exhausted and dehydrated, but that happens batting in India

he wasn't injured

Under Law 2 of the Laws of Cricket...

9. Batsman leaving the field or retiring

A batsman may retire at any time during his innings. The umpires, before allowing play to proceed, shall be informed of the reason for a batsman retiring.

(a) If a batsman retires because of illness, injury or any other unavoidable cause, he is entitled to resume his innings subject to (c) below. If for any reason he does not do so, his innings is to be recorded as -Retired 'not out'.

(b) If a batsman retires for any reason other than as in (a) above, he may only resume his innings with the consent of the opposing captain. If for any reason he does not resume his innings it is to be recorded as -Retired 'out'.

(c) If after retiring a batsman resumes his innings, it shall be only at the fall of a wicket or the retirement of another batsman.

maybe so, but he wasn't injured

this matter has been raised before

everyone gets dehydrated in India and can you imagine every batsman going off for a rest when they get hot and bothered,

so where do you draw the line

To be fair, he had heat exhaustion and probably heat stroke...that is a little more than mere dehydration and qualifies as illness under the conditions posted previously...

has anyone retired in test cricket for the sake of it?

Yes.

A couple of Sri Lankans did a few years back vs. a Bangladesh bowling attack that made a Sydney 5th grade outfit look threatening.
