Return of game of the round at the SCG

Argue as much as you want on the merits of the SFS or SCG.

What you are missing is that if there are regular games scheduled on a Sunday in Sydney, then people with kids can plan to go.

Really? The SFS?

It gets more crap crowds a year than ANZ... so many people I know hate going to the SFS simply due to the more difficult transport arrangements, both public and private. It's just not easy to get to.

How is the SFS hard to get to?

Just get a train to Central and walk up Forveaux St, Fitzroy St and Moore Park Rd and you are there...

Wests Tigers have yet another Home Ground now.

When it comes to teams needed to play at venues, Tigers are the NRL Whores.

Yep, just a train to somewhere then a giant walk.

Take a family of 4 and you have to either have to force them to endure a long walk or a crammed bus ride.

Alternatively, go to ANZ, take a train to the front door, you're there.

And then if you want to drive, well - good luck to ya.

Get to ANZ Stadium: Catch a train to Lidcombe then a second train to Olympic Park
Get to SFS: Catch a train to Central and then a special event bus to Moore Park

I'll concede that the former is probably a little easier for the majority of people, but it's hardly as difficult as you make it out to be.

Yeah, second that.

My 60 year old mum isn't real fussed either.

Not a bad idea, only at the SFS though surely...keep the SCG to one, maybe two games per year for traditions sake.

And even then, not a 'match of the round' every week at Moore Park...maybe only 5-10 or so good Sydney derbys with the right teams picked (ie: not Parra vs Penrith etc)

Yet another random seemingly thoughtless and rediculous idea that the NRL are going to run with. No wonder people just keep throwing up suggestions, sooner or later someone gets to invent something.

Couldn't agree more.

The SCG is the perfect example of people remembering only the good things about the past and forgetting about all the crap things that came with it. It's horrible for watching footy. There is a very good reason why games aren't played there anymore.

The SFS on the other hand is in the same great location and is a brilliant stadium. Use it for freaks sake!

You could take in your own beer and sit on the hill.

This is the sort of thing people remember.

Sitting in a plastic bucket and applauding when you are told to is not the same.

I love the idea, but there is another thread where we want clubs to take one home game a year to an expansion. Pretty soon the Tigers will have no home ground and the Bears will be even more pissed if thats possible.

NRL seeks return to SCG

MOVES are formally under way for rugby league to revisit 60 years of tradition by having regular Sunday afternoon games at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The SCG and Sports Ground Trust has contacted the NRL and some Sydney clubs about playing 10 heavyweight games at Moore Park at either the SCG or Sydney Football Stadium as early as next season.
Trust management are seeking for the match to be dubbed "match of the round'' with clubs possibly walking away with up to $300,000.
An online Daily Telegraph poll last week showed 71 per cent of fans wanted at least three games at the SCG each season.
Rugby league has a long tradition of playing "match of the round'' at the SCG - which started in 1913 and finished in 1973.
"If you make it a special event in Sydney then the people will go for it,'' SCG Trust chief executive Jamie Barkley said.
"Given the terrific season the NRL has just experienced, we think it would be an appropriate time to bring back the 'match of the round'.
"The fans have voted and they want rugby league played regularly in Moore Park. There is certainly an opportunity for 'match of the round' if we can maximise the game and have key stakeholders align.''
Clubs with existing financial deals at other venues may be reluctant to shift games.
The SCG Trust is hoping for Sydney derby games - or grudge matches - to be played at the famous venue.
Some games that could be shifted to the SCG or SFS would be Manly v Cronulla, Parramatta v Dragons, Canterbury v Parramatta, Canterbury v Dragons, Manly v Parramatta, Souths v Roosters and Sharks v Dragons.
Home tenants Wests Tigers and Sydney Roosters are expected to play key matches there.
"We are open-minded to the concept,'' NRL chief executive David Gallop said.
"But club arrangements with home venues are critical to the process. That includes commitments to corporate box holders, signage parties, members and fans who like their local ground.
"Commitments to government funding for stadium upgrades can also be impacted. But we are certainly happy to be part of any discussions the venue hirers wish to have with clubs.''
Asked whether his club would be interested in the concept, Manly chairman Scott Penn said: "We'd certainly be interested provided it is a match with traditional rivalry. I think it would be terrific for the game.''
Sharks CEO Richard Fisk said: "We are committed to 11 home games at Toyota Stadium but we would consider it if the game had special meaning, like against Manly, who we played in the '73 and '78 Grand Finals.
"Naturally we would have to consult the coach first.''

It says SCG or SFS. And its only a proposed 10 games. A few big games such as Tigers vs Souths and Parra vs Tigers have already been played at Moore Park for the last couple of seasons so it wont make to much difference to draw we've already had going - if anything, hopefully it will be an improvement with a few more Sydney blockbusters at bigger venues on Sunday afternoons.

True, this article is trying to focus on League returning to the SCG when its really a reaction to the NRL needing to play big games at big venues so we dont have the same mess that we had this year.

Match of the Round is a good idea.
But at the SFS.
SCG is the worst League ground in Sydney, honestly I'd rather be at Shark Park.

Exactly. I live in Coogee at the moment and I wouldn't even consider trying to get to homebush - the fact it'd take me a 20 minute bus ride just to get to a train station, at which point I'd need to catch 3 trains after that bus ride and I'd be looking at a minimum of 2 hour journey one way.

I find it hard to believe people in the west would have to deal with even half of that trip coming into the SFS or SCG.
