Return to Mt Smart

So apparently the border will fully open to Australians from April and the opening to the rest of the world is likely to be brought forward as well.

So is there a chance we'll get our original 18 June match against the Panthers at Mt Smart? It always felt like the club pulled the plug on that one a bit early.

I know it's risky but I'm still getting bloody excited about the chance to get back to Mt Smart sometime this year!!

Will need a traffic light change (to green from red) to get a crowd of any significance... that will take more public pressure I imagine... but looks like there is some hope

That's a good point. I don't think they'd bother with NZ games if they can't match the crowds they are getting in Oz. I have all my fingers and toes crossed that they'll find a way to make this happen with a massive crowd for that homecoming game. I can't even imagine how good that atmosphere will be after so long away.

May 1, we're fully open.

I can't imagine any other restrictions will go much further beyond that.

you think the answer would be informative?

with all the talk about culture, go even bigger - have an all-star parade - Manu, Packer, Locke, Lodge, I am sure I've missed someone...
Probably not, even if she didn’t reject the premise of the question ;)

Faumuina is still floating around, but has tidied himself up now. Brett Seymour has some yarns to share. Might even be able to send Walker over for the night

Outdoor gathering limits have been scrapped in NZ. No reason not to have full crowds now. Bring on Mt Smart games 2022!

(But if they keep playing this shit, they may as well not bother)

Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George says the club can now plan confidently for the first major rugby league game in New Zealand in more than two and a half years following the Government’s decision to remove a wide range of Covid-19 related restrictions.

As well as abolishing outdoor gathering limits, the Government has confirmed a significant loosening of vaccine pass requirements, most vaccine mandates and QR code scanning while masks will no longer be required at outdoor venues.

“It’s fantastic news for all the long-suffering rugby league fans and for sports organisations like ours,” said George.

“Until now we were cautiously optimistic families, members, fans and sponsors would at last be able to see the team playing in front of them at Mount Smart.

“But now we’re confident and hugely excited about the way being cleared for a return to our true home.

“Our first game back against Wests Tigers on July 3 will be one of the biggest and certainly the most emotional in the club’s history. We want to see the place packed to the rafters for what will be an unforgettable occasion.

“As a club we can’t wait for that day. We’re so thrilled fans will have the opportunity at last to see their team at our home.”

The match against Wests Tigers will be the Vodafone Warriors’ first at Mount Smart Stadium since they hosted South Sydney on August 30, 2019 while the last major rugby league game played in New Zealand was the second Test between the Kiwis and Great Britain in Christchurch on November 9, 2019.

After the Tigers on July 3, the Vodafone Warriors will host Melbourne (July 29), Canterbury Bankstown (August 12) and Gold Coast (September 3).

Four-game membership packages (reserved and general admission) are on sale here now while casual ticket sales will be launched through www.ticketmaster.co.nz on Monday, April 11. Buy a FanPass here for access to a members-only presale.

Would love to be at Mt Smart for that night. Gonna go off!!!!

Question though
Would Matt Lodge, Reecey Walsh and Macelo Montoya be able to enter NZ with their criminal record

You really think they’d have contracts if they couldn’t?
but seriously it’s nothing a half decent immigration consultant can’t sort out, you generally have to do something pretty terrible to be banned outright from receiving a visa, as in bad enough to spend a year or more in jail over it. Walsh would certainly have nothing to worry about, he got a slap on the wriest for a minor personal drugs charge.

I think Montoya would have a lot to be stressed about
What did he do and what sentence did he serve? Not familiar with his situation. Lodge might have to jump through a hoop or do but I don’t think it’s near a dealbreaker.
Remember Russell Oacker didn’t get deported back to NZ and played for two more clubs after his sentence so that’s a fairly good indicator of what can be worked with.

This is all good news but I still can't shake the question of why the club put a red line through the original June return match so early. It's still ages away, plenty of time to get it back on the table.
