Revolutionary knee surgery boosts Tupou

Revolutionary knee surgery similar to that used in heart operations has convinced Cronulla backrower Anthony Tupou he can return to his rampaging best in 2012.
The 28-year-old underwent stem cell surgery, which regenerates the growth of cartilage in his right knee, three months ago in a bid to cure a long-term knee problem.
Tupou is one of the first top-level professional sportsmen in Australia to use the procedure, which introduces new cells into damaged tissue and has also been used for brain and spinal surgery.
The former New South Wales and Test star has suffered with injury throughout his Sharks career and will start the new season pain-free for the first time since joining the club from Sydney Roosters in 2009.
"Just mentally I feel a lot better and physically as well," Tupou said.
"Not many people have had it done, they're still trialling it, but it feels good.
"For the last two-and-a-half years it's been not that good and this is the first year where it feels pretty fresh."
Highly respected Sharks' doctor David Givney, who also works with the New South Wales and Australia sides, believes the surgery will help prolong the careers of players and benefit them in later life.
Although he admitted it is too early to tell if Tupou's operation will be a resounding success, he is delighted with what he has seen so far.
"Stem cell recuperation of meniscus and cartilage in knees is not experimental, but it's still very early days," Givney said.
"We put it to the club that Anthony, who was pretty much bone on bone in his knee, might benefit from this and we decided to take the chance and it's been brilliant.
"We are overjoyed with the reaction. He's been back running for a couple of weeks now and looks really great."
The operation was performed by Dr Donald Kuah, who ironically works for Wests Tigers, the Sharks' opponents in round one on Sunday.
Givney was alerted to the possibility of the operation after attending a Kuah lecture on the subject last year.
"Donald knows Anthony and felt he would be the ideal patient as he's a quick healer in addition to being an easy going sort of individual," he said.
"Normally with this sort of injury you get pain and just put up with it and wait until you're 40 then get a knee replacement.
"Stem cell regeneration is the future of all sorts of medicine."
Tupou was named in the Sharks side to face the Tigers on Tuesday and said the Paul Gallen-led pack is the best he has ever played in.
"This is not only the best Sharks side I have every played in, but this is the strongest pack I've ever been a part of," he said.
"Competition for place is strong. This is the best the Sharks have looked for years."
Cronulla: Nathan Gardner, Stewart Mills, Ben Pomeroy, Colin Best, Matthew Wright, Wade Graham, Todd Carney, Bryce Gibbs, Isaac De Gois, Ben Ross, Jeremy Smith, Anthony Tupou, Paul Gallen (capt).
Interchange: Andrew Fifita, Sam Tagataese, John Morris, Mark taufua, Jayson Bukuya, Jon Green (two to be omitted).

Seems the past few years we have had a "Tupou will actually be better this year because.." I hope this is it. Being a contract year, having a good pack and Carney I reckon are all good signs for Tupou to finally have a big year for us.

Interesting story. Yeh let's hope it is his year - he owes us IMO.

I like Toops. But last year I thought he tried to bust his way through most of the time. I hope he finds more gaps this year and has a few runners sniffing around him.

He can slip a nice pass or two when he has too.

I'm backing him this year and I have high hopes for Fifita too. He could be a gun for us.

A friend of mine had this done last year, pretty amazing stuff really. Basically they take a piece of your cartlidge (sp?) and then grow it in a lab according to your genetic make up and then put it back in your knee.

This was a 50kg 49yr old mother btw not a sportsperson.

I remember watching him at the Rorters and thinkning "Why can't we have a guy like this?". Was stoked when we got him, have not been so happy since. I hope that now with his sister's passing and knee issues behind him he can really return to that form that had a lot of us excited about him coming to the Sharks.

Confident he'll have a good year for us. Better legs and a clearer mind no reason or excuses for him not to have a big year. Bring it on Toops.

I don't mean to sound too harsh here but he had an excuse for 2010 and now an excuse for 2011.

I just don't like seeing my club pay big money for duds

Same here Snoop. I was excited when we signed him and it's dwindled ever since. No excuses for 2012 or he'll be out the door!

Still doesn't beat Nigel Vagana for a massive waste of $$$.

1. Vagana
2. Ross (first time round)
3. Toops

I reckon the speed king was the worst one Ive seen for a while.

Darren Albert.

That time he made a break near our own quarter line, and nothing but daylight infront of the speed king and a bloke lying injured on the ground gets up and tackles him.

That'll do me for a wasted space.

He hasn't had a great few years, but hasn't been poor either, just not worth what we paid for him.

I reckon Toops played well when Kelly and Gardner were in form at the start of 2011.

He needs good support, and to not be used as a workhorse. With a better prop rotation, good forward depth, Carney, and hopefully Gardner back in form, I hope he goes back to that form (at least, his rep form would be nice).
