Slothfield pointed this out on FOX (maybe the first time i have agreed with the Alcoholic-At-Large)

The clubs are whinging that the ARLC hasnt saved anything, but thats because all of the ARLCs revenue flows straight to the clubs. So why havent the CLUBS saved anything?

Examples like above (signing a coach/player for $1mil/pa then firing them with 3 years left on their deal) are at EVERY club. They are just pissing money into the wind because the ARLC is always bailing them out.

The only fault of the ARLC in al of this is that they let the clubs run wild for so long.....

All the revenue flows to clubs???

He often condemns the damage that Superleague did to the game; but just remember that until News offered to pay big money, Gould's paymaster Packer was running the game for a fraction of it's worth. And it was Gould who made the offers of ludicrous sums to players like Fittler and Mundine to stay with Packer.
And just look at his great success with Penrith.
.

Definitely one thing people dont mention when talking about the SL War...

The ARL and Packer's faction refused to negotiate and work with potentially the biggest sponsorship opportunity in RLs history (its estimated that $0.5bil was spent on RL in that 5 years between 95-00)

That would be an absolute disaster for League at all levels.
Gould thinks he is the great font of League knowledge and that his views are the only right ones. And most of his opinions are "they're wrong. I'll tell you how to fix it later".

A prime example is his years of tirades against the refs and their weak stance on wrestling and general rulebreaking (offside, blocking etc,). So the NRL take a stand and start penalising the hell out of people. Gus doesn't like the high penalty counts and launches tirades against the refs until the NRL chokes and we go back to the bad old days. Make no mistake, the reason wrestling wasn't driven out of the game is Gould.

If you want Rugby League in Australia to continue then keep Gus well away from the ARL. If you want GusBall, then go for it.

You are spot on Saxon, the only bit I don't agree with is this

Gould's paymaster Packer was running the game for a fraction of it's worth.

While is was a bit short it is/was closer to what the game is worth than the large amounts offered and paid now days, its an artificial economy

It was a lot short. Especially as Packer was trying to give himself the newly developing digital market at no cost.
The Evil Empire (News Ltd) - of whom I am absolutely not a fan - originally offered significantly more than Packer & Co were paying, but not the ridiculous sums that eventually got tossed around. They came about when Packer decided he wanted to keep control of League at any cost.
Not defending either side, just saying the story is not quite as black and white as some people like to believe and anyone who thinks Packer was the white knight come to save Rugby League should look a bit deeper into it. The whole debacle was due to nothing but greed on both sides.

def and the interesting thing is no one really wants to point the fingers at the players. While they don't really have control over what they are offered they are still major beneficiaries of the greed

Pfft, honestly what is John Ribot up to these days?

He might not be the most popular figure but:
- founding CEO of Broncos (most successful NRL team)
- founding CEO of SL (love it or hate it, he pretty much laid the blueprint for modern NRL)
- Founding CEO of the Storm (the second most successful team after his Broncos, and in a VFL heartland)

He has a better track record than most of the NRLs plods....

I think you have to ask yourself if you liked his vision for the game, first. I didn’t and still don’t. Template jerseys, kicking clubs out or merging/relocating them with scant disregard for the fans involved. Lack of understanding of tribalism. Killed any chance of a genuine derby in Brisbane. His version of the game was corporate and sterile.

If they ARL had the smarts and hadn’t already committed to packer then it could Have worked and the game could have been in a very different place globally by now. There was lots to like in the SL vision and with a bit of tweaking and arl remaining in control but with the $’s from news behind them it could have been anything. Oh well RL does like to miss a good opportunity lol.

I think I’ve discussed this with you before but your memory may be a little faulty on this issue as you were back in Bradford or whatever your hometown was at that time..

It had nothing to do with “smarts”...They had no other choice but to commit to Packer as Channel 10 the contracted TV rights holders at the time went bust and Channel 7 weren’t interested...

But no need to go back 25 years to find fault..

I blame your man Smith for bloating the admin costs and introducing the caviar and champagne lifestyle to running the game..
