The Newcastle Knights will today announce coach Brian Smith will leave the club, effective immediately.
The Knights have called a media conference for today where they will confirm Rick Stone as the new head coach for the rest of 2009 and the next two seasons.

Smith and the Knights - the full story

The move follows an emergency board meeting last night where Stone was annointed, and Smith's shock announcement this month he will defect to the Sydney Roosters next season.
Brian Smith: My walkout was just business

Stone will take the reigns for Monday night’s clash against Melbourne.

The drama follows weeks of unrest since Smith announced he would join the Roosters on a four-year deal.

Since his announcement the Knights have suffered three heavy defeats and are on the brink of missing out on the finals.

Had to happen , the results havent been there since he announced his intention for next year.

Is this a trial period for Stone or has he got the gig regardless next year.

Good news for Knights fans.
Really hope the knights can rally and put in a good performance against the Storm.

Where's that Brian smith detractors thread again?!

How this bloke keeps getting a gig is beyond me.

He used to be able to at least build teams up and make them a threat. Hasn't even got the Knights to the finals during his tenure.

If they make it this year, he started it, but it's now up to Stone to finish it.

Should have happened as soon as Smith announced he was leaving.

In the end that probably would have been the best outcome. While i think the players should still be putting in for the coach, its wierd having a coach at the club who has their mind on next seasons job.

Example: Bennet was recruiting players to St George last season. I know he didnt recruit many but it just shows that they are required to have their mind on 2 jobs.

At one point this season newcastle were top 4 contendors. In the last 2 years they have beaten or contended with every good side. Its a shame the players have dropped their bundle in the last month.

Raiders did it last year when Henry signed for the cowboys mid contract. The Raiders players voted to keep Henry and they went on to finsh 6th.
Its possible for team to continue and improve .
