Ricky Stuart

Sometimes I really question the empahasis put on a coach for a team's poor performance. Take Tim Sheens and Graham Murray for example. Both guys have been sacked by cellar dwellers, but have also been regarded (at other teams) as geniuses or super coaches.

If (by some freak of nature) the Roosters miss the finals this year - would that make Ricky Stuart go from one of the best coaches in the comp to one of the worst? The Chooks still have about 9 or 10 origin/test players in their team so they should definitely be going better than they are. Did he just earn his kudos on the back of Fittler - only time will tell...

No one can replace Fitler. Put him or Lockyear in your team, and you have a team capable of anything. All you need to do every year is Build, find a combination with a half, and your just about at a GF.

He can not be replaced. Ricky is a good coach from what i have seen, but he aint going to be anywhere near as successfull without Freddy. Not even With Mundine.

Too many mistakes and mistackles, as well as wrong options by over zealous players.

Ricky would be better off playing halfback himself.

Ricky is a top notch coach. If anybody has a short memory, look what he did in 2002. Nobody could match the Roosters once they started playing their brand of uber-football invented by Ricky himself. Not to mention the discipline and professionalism he helped to imlpement.

But.... he is making a huge mistake by not playing Brett Firman in first grade. Regardless of whether or not Finch and Firman know how to play together at the moment, our long term success can only be achieved by the two of them getting it right. Craig Wing is a super player but he's not a playmaker.

Another mistake Ricky made was playing Fitzy off the bench this week. He is not a bench player and in the past has shown that he gets all out of sync with the game when he doesn't start, hence the uncharacteristic 3 penalties he gave away today.

Those penalties where nobodies fault but fitzgibbons, thats what happens when you don't get off the tackled player when the ref asks.

Bring on some more excuses JBW, it makes the victory all the more sweet

Ricky Stuart was a fantastic player, no doubt about it.
At this stage, it really is impossible to say how good he is at coaching.
He is in the apprentice stage to Gould, who let's face it, has a pretty astute football brain.
Sticky may turn out to be fantastic, but the fact that Gus has so much input into the Roosters training/plays and so forth mean that Ricky aint doin' much coachin'!

That old dried up porn-star wannabe Ronnie Palmer has more input into the Roosters than that 'Sticky-puppet!'

However, in defence of Ricky Stuart, if I was in his shoes and had accesss to a football smartypants like Gould, I'd probably do whatever he suggested too!!!

Ofcourse, there would always be that over-riding will to smash his front-teeth right outta' his arse, but I guess that's the difference between me & sticky!

Doesn't take a brilliant coach to take teams like the '02, '03 and '04 Roosters to Grand Finals. Fittler made Ricky look better than what he was, it's showing now. Any side with Brad Fittler in it can get to Grand Finals, he is quite possibly the best of all time and his leadership kept the Roosters together. They should bring him out of retirement and play him at Lock (so they can settle a new halves combo) just for his leadership.

Roosters will come good over time, but they have made their last grand final for a while it looks. Probably won't get higher than 6 on the ladder if they're lucky too.

Coaches can go stale and their performances can suffer.
They can go from the penthouse to the cellar very quickly.

It's amusing to read here how Brad Fittler supposedly "carried" Ricky Stuart over the past three seasons yet, for the past three seasons on here I've read constantly of how over rated Brad Fittler is.

Can't have it both ways, kids.

I will say one thing about Ricky Stuart, his bench selection/use is appaulling.

Some bench players only get 10-20 mins per game?
Some bench selections are baffling to begin with!

I suppose in hindsight, much of my original thinking was about the role of a head coach in the modern game. Guys like Bennett surround himself with quality assistants and I see his success more in the mentoring and recruitment of players. All of his guys can't say enough about his ability to get the most out of an individual on and off the field and that is often what attracts young talent to his team.

Does Ricky have the right stuff to keep the Roosters ticking once leaders like Fittler, Cayless and Morley retire??

This is Stuarts first real test as a coach. We all know how badly the Roosters go without Fittler, and it is showing now that they miss him. Over rated in people eyes or not, the Rooster still struggle to win without him.

If Stuart can get the Roosters through this time, then he'll prove his worth as a coach, if he can't it could very well end his career at the roosters.

Unfortunately the Roosters aren't that forgiving when it comes to coaches, just ask Murray. Coached them to a grand final one year, missed the GF the next and got dumped. Stuart could very well suffer the same fate.

Gee, put the knives away, it's only been 3 games, after 3 seasons of success.

3 seasons of success? All they have to show for it is a JJG (04) and a Claytons (02). I won't go as far to say the Bulldogs have enjoyed seasons of success because they have only been successful in 2004. Quite frankly, if Sydney don't hammer us on Friday, I'll give it away. The team's glory days are over if they can't put away what, at the moment, is a pathetic excuse for a Canterbury team.

I am of the opinion it is still to early to truly judge Stuart as a coach....Sure, he's had some modicum of success over the past 3 years...but then - lokk at the players he's had at his disposal!!...

If anything, 1 Premiership, and 2 Grand Final 'no-shows' is a minor failure given the sheer array of Origin, and Oz, Kiwi & Pommie test stars theyv had in this time!...The Roosters really had an opportunity there to go on and form a real dynasty at one stage there...Well they will recover from their current struggle - but talk of dynasties is LONG gone out Bondi way!

To me - Itshows the Roosters lack a bit of character - ticker - or the tactical nous to adapt on a big stage occasion - or both - which is down to the coach!! Only thing I really know - wouldn't swap Folkes for Stuart...Folkes has done an OUTSTANDING job with the players we've had thru the club in the last 3 years!..>We lose a couple of good players - Folkesey & co are there scouting, developing, and grooming up the NEXT ones!

Thing is - he's now got the NSW Origin side - and if we happen to win this year's series...the plaudits will only get LOUDER!...Somewhat undeservedly so, because you could put friggin' Tony Kemp in charge of the NSW Origin side, and they'd still come out looking hafway decent!
