I remember Waqar shitting himself after the Beamer and Roy walking down the pitch at him while Tony Greig yelling “ Looooook out Waqarrrrrrrrrr he doesn’t look to happy”
Actually funny you mention Waqar he came to our primary school i think it might been the year before that world cup would have been 2002.

Because when he did that beamer i thought he was nice gentle bloke and all haha after meeting him the year before.

The reason he came to our school was a talking gig to us all kids about sport and getting out there having fun as his niece actually went to our primary school so hence why he made the visit one day to talk to all the kids.

I think Waqar still lives in Castle Hill these days.

Favourite Roy moment for me will always be that Boxing Day test against the Poms. 5 down for not that many but him and Hayden put on an epic partnership that blew the game out of the water. His 6 and jump for joy was true elation.

I remember that innings i would have been 8 years old and it was a school night.

I think the game started at 7pm straight after the news on channel 9 who had the coverage.

By the time Roy got out there was closer to my bed time but parents allowed me to stay up and watch Australia bat there innings.

What a sliding doors moment for Roy it was who had never performed at that level before that day despite having numerous chances.

I dont think he was even supposed to play in that game injuries & suspension meant Australia had no choice especially with Warnie being sent home the day before.

Must have been 13, somehow had a second hand TV in my room (Black and white only, with a dodgy TV aerial...). I fell asleep around midnight, I remember one beamer and 50 odd from Symonds.

Before that Symonds was bits of pieces. In and out of the ODI team. Same category as Ian Harvey, Shane Lee, Tom Moody etc. That innings was a surprise. Big show of faith letting him bat at 6.

From Wikipedia:

After all-rounder Shane Watson had to withdraw due to injury, Shane Warne was sent home after failing a drugs test, and with Darren Lehmann still serving a suspension for racial abuse, Symonds made his way into the starting XI.

According to former England cricketer Adam Hollioake, Symonds would not have made the 2003 World Cup squad if he had not received backing from captain Ponting.

In the first match against Pakistan, Symonds scored 143 not out to guide Australia from 4/86 to 8/310 en route to an 82-run victory,

Symonds was man of the match in the 2003 WC semi final v Sri Lanka too. Arguably a better knock too. 90 not out on a dead wicket v Murali and the other spinners.

Think he ended up averaging 100+ in WC games. Gun player.

7/20 against the English and then whacking Andre Adams for 6 off a 2 bounce ball. We're 2 great memories

He deserves a lot more recognition during his career does Bicho.
Was a very reliable tail ended who could stick around with a top order batsman and save a game. Kind of like what Cummins has made a knack of doing. All great teams have them.
