THE Parramatta Eels have had their pre-season rocked by the sudden death of strength and conditioning coach Sean Burns on Friday.
Eels chairman Roy Spagnolo and coach Stephen Kearney both paid tribute to Burns, who joined the Parramatta club from Wests Tigers three months ago.
Burns was recruited to the Eels following the departure of former strength and conditioning coach Hayden Knowles.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family because family always comes first at our club," Spagnolo said.
"It's very sad news. As a club we'll give the guy the respect he deserves."
Eels coach Kearney said the Parramatta playing squad was still in shock and echoed Spagnolo's sentiments to the Burns family.
The head coach broke the news to the entire Eels playing squad just after 5pm on Friday.
"It's a real shock for our footy club. He'd only been here for three months but he'd made such an impact in that time and we all just can't believe it really," Kearney said. "I know he'd had a fairly significant impact at the Tigers as well with a lot of the younger guys who had come through the grades there who are now obviously first graders.
"Our immediate thoughts are with the family. There's a lot of very upset people at our club."
No funeral date has been set yet. The loss comes at a difficult time for the Eels with the season due to start in just over a month.
