Can Oz read?

I always imagined you reading posts on here out to him.

If you can write something for us here, that'd be great.

Haha... I can read....sometimes.

There's not a lot I can say regarding Phil..I used to read his pieces in the programs at Carlaw Park but I had no idea 'Skinner from the Sideline' was in fact Phil Butcher.. His stories were always interesting and gave a good insight into what was going on in the Auckland club scene. He wasn't a bullshit artist, if something was going on, he told it like it was in his writing... something he carried on on here and , as a diehard bullshit artist, it's one of the things about him I respected.

He used to live not far from me on the North Shore in Birkenhead, both of us supported the Northcote Tigers and Phil was a great clubman.
It's funny how I know a lot of people who knew him, but we never actually introduced ourselves to each other.
Be good to catch up with them at his service.

I actually met the guy on the forums, iirc he was also part of the old LWOS and he was one of our first members here.. he was a good forum man, he ruffled a few feathers (as you do on footy forums) but he was protective of LU's image... and he knew quite a bit about footy.

His nrl club was Western Suburbs.

When I met him about 15 odd years ago he was in pretty poor health, he suffered badly from eczema, had a couple of fairly major heart operations and also pretty poor circulation problems.
When he and Chris decided to up stumps and move to oz he asked if Ali and I would look after his old dog. We looked after Mai but I think she missed them so much that a month or so later died of what can only be described as a broken heart..Was very sad for Phil and Chris.. guess it was like losing one of the kids..

Phil and Chris lived in Newcastle for a while and Ali and me went over to see them, staying with them for a few days.. was an awesome time. . They couldn't do enough for us and Phil ( who was pretty much housebound then) went out of his way to make us welcome..we've been over there a few time and that trip definitely stands out..

Chris and their daughter,Cassie, both worked for the ARL and Phil and Ali got them to grab some timber from the Railway Stand when it was being demolished. Was given to me as a birthday present and I've turned it into jersey frames..

It's quite strange when Ali told me the other day he was in trouble, he'd been on my mind and I felt guilty about the length of time that had elapsed since I'd spoken to him...

A genuine good bastards was Phil Butcher..
He never gave up the struggle with his health and life in general.
I really feel for Chris.. she devoted her life to the bloke while he was having his health issues.

I miss the man.

Phil's service is from 12-2 tomorrow at the Northcote Rugby Club.. just a gentle reminder.
Time has caught up with us as always.
I know he is missed.

I had no idea this thread existed, as sad as I was to hear that Skinner had passed, I (perhaps somewhat selfishly) had wished there was some avenue available to be able to pay some respect to him.

It will always come across as cliche, but I truly never ever read a forum post here from Skinner that was having a serious, and potentially hurtful go at someone. If he was having a go at you, either in jest, or just to politely tell you to pull your head in, it was always done with a kind word, and respect.

Like many I never met him in person, but he came across as very quick witted, and extremely knowledgeable on this great game that we all love (and sometimes hate, but we always come back).

Much love to his family.

Cheers Skinner.
