Why should the NRL be paying for injuries in competitions outside the NRL? Surely that is the reaponsibility of the insurance taken out by those competitions?

If anything this incident should be a wake up call to all the players to take their insurance seriously. Income protection against major injury would cost absolutely nothing relative to their salaries. Hey should all take out such policies as a matter of course every year.

Insurance for these players would cost a fair bit because they work in a very high risk industry. That is not to say they shouldn't have it, they should. A % of their salary should be deducted to cover it or it should be paid for by the NRL and offset against future salary cap increases. The cheapest way to do this would likely be a group policy that all players are covered under and there are a range of techniques that could be used to structure it in the most cost effective way.

Alternatively the players could each take out their own cover. There are some players who do today and there are a number of ex footballers who have financial planning practices who could help them out and know about their situations (Colin Ward and Luke Priddis to name 2).

Life insurance and permanent disability pay out when your death or injury is caused by a criminal action. As does home and content insurance, comprehensive car insurance, income protection.... and pretty much all of them really.

OK, so if insurance covers the sort of injury Alex sustained, under the circumstances he sustained it, whatever is the problem? Is it that such insurance is not being taken out, or is it too expensive? Every employer has to have Workers Comp to cover their employees. Is this not the case for first grade RL players?

A lot of people are making a lot of money from this game. Yet something appears seriously wrong when we even have to have a "Rise For Alex Round".

I actually think it would be considered a pretty low risk industry relative to many trades. There are deaths in most trades every year. There are none in league basically ever. Similarly, the spinal injuries in league would be quiet a bit less than in higher risk industries like on construction sites or in mining.

On top of which, most clubs continue to pay the full salaries of injured players for the life of their contract in the NRL, unless they have to retire. A bloke who breaks his leg in the NRL (on or off the field) will simply take 6 months off on full pay and be back the next year. Very different to a bloke breaking his leg and needing 6 months off work will need to activate his income protection. So they only need cover for the most serious of injuries.

Yep the massive ALEX chant ringing around the stadium to the point that Mckinnon started crying certainly seemed pretty muted to me.

What should they have played instead of the song that Alex requested you think?

Yep. That started (or at least only took off) once the song had finished

I'm not saying they should have played something different. It's Alex's day. It's just a shit song

Most people use their current medi-care coverage.

Id question what you expect to be added to that, without raising registration to $1000 a year...

Don't NRL clubs have a version of workers comp? Very moving to see the crowd respond andAlex's emotions.

Good to hear Dave smith say they are setting up a foundation to help all seriously injured players at every level, well overdue.
