this strength of purpose is exactly what is needed by rugby league or "any organisation that needs someone with a spine who can drive something".

Couldn't agree more.

But Albanese said no. Apparently he has veto power in our game.

Apparently so, but I don't know why, or how. Perhaps the NRL needs to focus a bit more on the independant part of the independant commision.
A gossip journalist from the Telegraph said that Anthony Albanese told them they could not choose John Howard. Think about it, the NRL is 50% controlled by News Ltd and a member of parliament would tell them who they can select on the new commission?

I don't particularly care for Howard politically, never have. But I do think the concept of having a former Prime Minister as one member of the inaugural Commission would have benefited the game. Especially if that former Prime Minister seemed to actually have some real affection for the game (unlike any of the other PMs of the last thirty years).

A commissioner coming to the table having held the highest political office in the land would have had a significant impact on how strong the Commission is perceived to be - both the perception from outside and the Commission's perception of itself and its power. A commission with a former Prime Minister involved won't be afraid of taking bold decisions. After all running Rugby League has got to look easy next to some of the decisions a Prime Minister has to face.

I just wonder if a Commission without that element (or a future Commission without that precedent) will be as prepared to wield the same power. Or will it instead be more inclined to defer to the steady as she goes approach of the current executive administration?

For me this isn't about Howard. The guy is 70, he won't be around that long. Its about a certain role to fill in the image and dynamic of the Commission. It's about how strong we want to Comission to be and seen to be. Not just for the term of the inaugural Commisioners but for the long term. Long after Howard is dead and safely buried.

And that was totally inaccurate. The article paints a picture that the government took away a pledge from the previous government and reconstituted the same pledge. Totally wrong.
The article also said Kevin Rudd had no problem with John Howard on the Independent Commission. Kevin Rudd also gave former Liberal members of parliament overseas diplomate postings after 2007 election. I think they also gave Peter Costello a position as a director on the Board of Guardians of the Federal Government's Future Fund.
I couldn’t imagine News Ltd being too threatened by Anthony Albanese. Someone saying, “that’s a stupid idea”, suddenly becomes a threat? A threat for what?

News Ltd do. They will nominate people to the new commission. News Ltd raised the allegation that Anthony Albanese made some kind of threat,

Spot on. This Commission should never be about agendas, politics between clubs, past political history, who they represent or anything like that. Though it will be. This Commission should be about getting the best people available to further rugby league as a code. And they don't necessarily have to be league people. This Commission needs people who are influential, have the business and legal skills to negotiate the best deal for the code and people who are good administrators. And they should be strong minded individuals who won't back down for what they believe in. The Commission needs to be the real deal, and that comes from having the real deal on the Commission.

If it was doable, I'd have the likes of Gail Kelly, Allan Fels, Chip Goodyear, John Howard, Frank Lowy, Graham Annesley and John Coates as part of the non club or state body affiliated directors. For the clubs, I'd be looking at people such as Helen Clark to represent the Warriors, John Quayle for the Roosters, John Fahey for the Dogs, Sterlo for Parra, Roy Masters for the Saints and Warren Ryan for the Tigers. All these people have the skills and influence to make things happen.

The first sniff of getting somone in who is truly independent, and more than qualified on many levels, and it is scuttled by some partisan dickwad on party political lines. And the worst thing is RL supported Albanese's agenda. What hope has this independent commission got if its makeup can be determined by some muppet like Albanese rattling cages?
Tell me how Anthony Albanese stopped John Howard from being a commissioner of the independant commission?

News Ltd will be gone. The commission will be chosen by the clubs and the RLs.

Thats wrong. The initial commission members will be picked by the ARL and News Ltd, subject to club aproval.

Once on the board, the board then picks its replacements, and the clubs only have the power to boot members and opose replacements.

I wish Liz Hannan all the best in writing her column in the SMH that appeals to a Miranda Devine/Janet Albrechtsen type readership. I wish her the best in her endeavors in canvassing employment for the Wallaby tracksuit wearing John Howard. Her point about Rugby League being the Joel Monaghan game would be as silly as referring to Union as the Phil Kearns game.
I think most of the people nominated in the press would be OK. Probably the one I would like to see the most would be John Quayle,
