Well News Ltd get to appoint members. They were never able to do this under the ARL.
News Ltd get an equal say with the ARL in the first eight commissioners only. After that they're gone. News have no say in future appointments. The ARL can veto any News Ltd suggestion for those first eight. The clubs have no formal say, either in the first eight or any future appointment.

Personally I'm more worried that the outgoing ARL will try to stack the commission with old boys that adhere to the traditional factional divides than anything News are likely to do. Having a restraint on the ARL's ability to corrupt the handover with their bad old ways is actually kind of reassuring.

So...wasn't the original ARL itself essentially an 'independant commission'?
No. Each member of the ARL board represented one constituency or another (eg. QRL, NSWRL) meaning it was riven by factional poiltics where every major decision was a pissing competition. The only constituency that members of the Commission will represent is Rugby League.

So how come the NRL club bosses are having a piss up in Byron Bay and making decisions for the future of the game, like expansion? And the NSWRL represents many of these very same clubs. They are elected by those clubs.

They're not in the strictest sense. The clubs are being consulted, asked for suggestions, brainstorming. The NRL representatives at that meeting have agreed to implement some of the more immediate suggestions. But ultimately the power to do this remains with NRL, not the clubs. There is nothing to stop the Commission reversing those decisions or ignoring the club suggestions for the future (as the current NRL Partnership executive committee could do today if it wished)

Representing a constituency is a good thing. It means that each member on the ARL board was elected.

This is preferable to the 'faceless men' model that is being proposed.

so what do people think of Allan Jones as a IC member? What does he bring?

Pros: Media influence, recognisable face and someone who won't just sit back and toe the line.

Cons: Tosser. Lack of credibility for the IC i.e the circus effect. Questionable loyalties.

'But while the consensus was that expansion was a positive for the game at the appropriate time, that may not be 2013, as has been widely expected - and there may not be any additions to the 16-team premiership before 2015....

The power of the clubs is increasing as the founding of an independent commission to run the game nears completion. The clubs are more likely to join forces on major issues, as demonstrated by the push from NSW clubs to install their representatives in key positions at the NSWRL this Friday.'

So people are now waking up to the fact that the clubs will be running the show and that is not such a good thing. To all those who wanted to jump at the first deal that was offered that handed 100% of the sport to these clubs, are you starting to see why this was f...ing stupid?

'Gallop added: ''Not only would they need to have viable business plans for themselves, but they would have to show they could add something to the overall health of the game.'''

And why wouldn't they? Any new clubs are surely going to add something. Some more than others.

Does anyone know if John Singleton is eligible for consideration for a position on the IC? A true blue league man and successful to boot. I've got no idea if he's an option or not.
Cheers.
