RLIF Board to review eligibility rules

To me your line of thinking seems to be the definition of short term planning Johnny, quick fix now and think about it again in 50 years time?

I am not against reppiing two countries I just think there should be rules in place. Im a big fan of the 4 year world cup cycle eligibilty that others have suggested.

If you want to rep your heritage fine, do it as an up and comer or the back end of your career. Don't do it because your form took a dive and you're not good enough to make the Kiwis squad. I just want to see commitment to a cause.

Im fine with Milford playing for Samoa at RLWC 2013 then switching to Aus for RLWC17. In the reverse i'm fine with Frank Pritchard playing for NZ at RLWC13 then playing for Samoa in RLWC17.

What I hate is the notion that Manu Ma'u can play for Tonga in 2015, play for the Kiwis in 2016. Have a form slump in 2017 not make the kiwis squad and then go back to Tonga to "help them out". There is no commitment or sacrifice in that.

Do we want commitment or sacrifice or do we want to strengthen the international game that is rugby league? I'll take a strong international game any day of the week.

Here's a radical idea! Why not let the Pacific Islands and PNG select their sides first. If you are eligible and then selected that is who you play for. New Zealand and Australia can then choose their squads from what is left. How do you guys who are advocating strict eligibility rules at the moment feel about that?

It's not ideal to tell players who they are to play for if deep down they don't really want to. You could ask them to stipulate their preferences beforehand so they leave out nations they don't want to play for, but would this change the current situation much?

The aussies won't go for one nation for life

Pretty pathetic the country with the largest player pool are the issue.

As from 1st January 2017 and wipe the slate clean and start again.
You can only play for a country if you was born there or who had a parent born there or has lived in that country for at least 10 years.
Once you have played for a country at senior level there is no switching to another country.
Its so simple to enforce and there are no grey areas.

Agreed.

Ideally both.

I'm a believer in one nation for life but I have compromised my position and offered an alternative.

This issue has come to head due to the recent mefia scrutiny, so it's obvious there is a need to tread the line between international competition and eligibility integrity.

If you do that you open a can of worms. How do you define a player as "their's". Samoa, Tonga & the Cooks haven't picked a product of their domestic league/development in years.

The majority of their players are second generation who have come through the NZRL/ARL system. What ownership are the PI teams entitled to?

Cos they'll never be able to entice someone a semi radradra

More like it would rule players out of State of Origin - which is all the NRL cares about

or

It would force them to change Origin eligibility which it won't do because they like it that way.

I think my "jan 1st - 4 year lock in" plan strikes a happy medium..we all want one nation for life, well most of us..richard lewis wanted it but got shouted down by the aussies & kiwis which led to lewis leaving the sport..so lets start with something that everyone can agree with..and then, later down the track when every nation is playing more meaningful tests...you never know,in the future players might choose NOT to switch..thats when we think about bringing in one nation for life..might take 12-16 years..but one day we'll get there hopefully
